Atitlan volcano is a tough hike, with 5,000 ft of elevation gain over ~4 miles. But man is it worth it. The first 3 miles are in a beautiful, dense forest, slowly giving way to more sparse vegetation before opening up to a final ascent up volcanic rocks. Near the top, one can see multiple geothermal vents spewing out hot steam. Once on the summit, the views are tremendous - of Lake Atitlan, but also Fuego volcano (which was erupting) to the southeast, and Tajamulco (highest volcano in Central America) to the northwest. Take water and snacks, and be prepared for lots of up, but you'll be glad you did. And you'll also be glad you took the journey with Salvador, our organized, friendly, and knowledgeable guide with probably 100 Atitlan summits under his belt.
