Awesome Excursion, But Read This First!
Alina_N
, May 2022
My husband and I booked the Discovery Package (all day excursion). Here’s my honest breakdown of everything.
The communication with the company Tour Package Punta Cana was not good at all. I had been trying to get in touch with them days before my excursion to confirm a pickup time and location with no response. I was told I would receive an email with my pickup time and location. For context, I was staying at the Majestic Mirage resort. I never received this email. Finally after contacting Viator and letting them know, the tour operator messaged me with the pickup time and details (which I’m guessing they only did because Viator contacted them). They did this at 8:00pm the night before our excursion. The pickup time was listed at 7:40am outside of our main resort gate (not the lobby). My husband and I waited for an hour. No one came and picked us up, no one contacted us, and no one would respond to us. The vehicle listed for pickup said “truck or bus with Rex buggy” but didn’t have a picture of what it looked like or color (later, we found out it is a large yellow, open safari bus with a T-Rex logo and “Rex Buggy” written on it). Our hotel butler had to contact them several times to get a hold of them. Finally, when he did get in touch with the company, the tour operator told our butler he didn’t have our reservation and it must have been a mix up. Despite us having paid and confirmed tickets with a pickup email and instructions. So they sent a taxi to pick us up because their bus had already come and didn’t get us. The taxi experience was so unpleasant. First of all, we didn’t know if the taxi was legitimately sent from the company or not. The taxi driver didn’t know who sent him or where he was going. We had an uneasy feeling the entire time and didn’t feel safe at all. He did end up taking us to the right place, but it was a terrible experience getting there. Once we got to the excursion though, it was great!
Part 1 included dune buggy/ATVS through Dominican farmland, coffee & chocolate tasting, natural cenote and cave, and trip to Macao Beach. I believe we started at 8:30am and ended at 12:30pm. Our tour guide Charlie was FANTASTIC! He was hilarious, informative, and engaging. He made the experience even better! The dune buggies were super fun! You will get really muddy so make sure to wear clothes you don’t care about. Also wear a bathing suit or swimming trunks. Just a note, no training was given on how to drive the dune buggy or ATV. My husband had to ask one of the staff members for a tutorial. It was pretty straightforward, but keep that in mind if you’ve never driven either before. The coffee and chocolate tasting was delicious! There are a lot of vendors trying to sell you things, so just be firm if you are not interested. The natural cenote was so beautiful and cool. It’s a natural pool of water inside a cave. It’s turquoise blue and so pretty! However, it was 20 feet deep and the company does not provide life jackets. There are life jackets for rent outside of the cave. Even with a life jacket though, the company strongly recommended not to get in unless you are a good swimmer. I am not, so I didn’t get in but my husband did. Everyone has to dive in! After that, there was an opportunity for people to check out the local shops. They had hilarious names like “Dominican Walmart”, “Dominican Macy’s”, and “Dominican Target”. Then we continued our dune buggy ride to Macao Beach. Unlike the picture it shows here, you don’t actually ride your buggie or ATV on the beach. You park offsite and walk. Macao Beach was probably my favorite part. It was STUNNINGLY beautiful. It looked like a desktop screensaver beach. There was a mountainside and beach merging together with crystal clear blue waters. There was no seaweed and it was not populated at all. There were very few vendors selling anything. Actually, this was the beach no one bothered us at all. My only gripe was that I wish we got to stay at beach longer. Then we got back on our dune buggies to ride back to the tour site. For the all day package, after Part 1 of the excursion, the tour company would take you back to the hotel for a break.
This time the bus did take us back to the hotel, but we barely had an hour break. We asked the driver to confirm our pickup time and pickup location and explained what happened in the morning. Luckily he was able to confirm it with us. He also told us what the vehicle would look like that was picking us up. The break was more like 45 minutes. We barely got time to change and shower. The break should have been a little longer in my opinion. They did pick us up at 2pm as they noted and picked a few others up from different resorts.
For Part 2, they took us to a marina for the cruise. The marina itself was not very pretty to look at. The beach had tons of dried seaweed and brown sand. There was litter and the water looked kind of murky by the shore. Once we got on the catamaran though, the water got beautiful. Our tour guide Michael was awesome too! He was so fun and was really focused on keeping everyone safe. Our first stop was snorkeling. They took us out further into the sea and said only those who are strong swimmers could snorkel. It was 20 feet deep. Even with a life jacket, they said the current was too strong if you were not a strong swimmer. I was a little bummed because I was assuming we would snorkel in shallow waters. It was never listed in the details. My husband got to do the snorkeling and said it was amazing. He saw tons of colorful species of fish and a ray! After snorkeling, they commenced the open bar with 3 options: rum & coke, rum & punch, and a mojito. The drinks were great and unlimited! For food, they had a fruit tray and chips and salsa. This wasn’t the best, but at least they had some food since we weren’t able to eat lunch during our short break. The dolphin viewing was anticlimactic. We saw the head of a dolphin but that was it. There was an enclosed area for dolphins, which was kind of interesting, but the dolphin watching was an afterthought for the tour. We danced a lot on the boat and had a good time. It’s a party vibe, so if you’re looking for a natural ocean exploration, this isn’t the right excursion. The tour guide and staff showed us a dance. We got to the natural pool and that was really fun! It was shallow so I was able to get in. There were a lot of other boats and people though. It was near a remote island but we weren’t allowed to actually go onto the island, we had to stay in the water. Despite being completely in the water, that didn’t keep the vendors away. There were vendors selling things in the water (including pictures with a live monkey and parrot - YES in the water lol). We spent about an hour in the natural pool and then got back onto the boat to head back to the marina. I believe we got done around 6pm. The company took us back to our hotels by 6:30pm.
Here are my main points:
- Communication is terrible. Continuously contact the company at all numbers provided on WhatsApp and directly through Viator. Do this well before your trip and do not wait for the day before to confirm. If you cannot get a hold of them, have someone at your resort or hotel contact the company too. Their name isn’t listed anywhere, but they are “Tour Package Punta Cana.”
- It is key that they pick you up in their vehicle. The taxi experience was awful.
- There are an immense amount of vendors throughout the entire excursion. Our tour guides were honest about this and said to let us know if anyone was bothering us too much. Just say “no” really firmly if you don’t want to buy anything. With this in mind, nothing is free in Punta Cana.
- There are photographers taking pictures throughout the entire excursion. You can purchase these pictures after Part 1 and Part 2. We decided not to get the ATV pictures but got the cruise ones. If you are not interested, just be firm with the photographer as well or else they’ll keep taking pictures.
- Bring cash to tip your tour guides and drivers! They were all excellent.
- Wear clothes you don’t care about because you will get muddy.
- Get a waterproof phone bag case to take your phone into the water or through the mud.
- Be very fast during your one hour break. Go back to your room and change then come back. They’ll arrive there before or by your pickup time.
- If you’re not a strong swimmer, they won’t really let you participate in a lot of activities (even with a life jacket).
- The cruise portion of the package is a party vibe, not ocean exploration focused. We enjoyed it, but we know that’s not for everyone.
Would I go back? Now that I know how they work, yes. There could have been more details about each activity and the limitations for each of them. The logistics were not the best. However the excursion itself was awesome and I’m glad we did it!

Each excursion itself was great but having the two excursions together was a bad idea. We were supposed to get lunch in between each trip but we did not. Didn't get lunch until almost 3 o'clock. We had to wait a considerable amount of time between trips with no information. Very frustrating.

An epic day of adventure and fun.

We had an absolutely fantastic time on both parts of this package There were 11 of us in our group and it was super easy to get it all booked. They picked us up from our resort with no problems and took us where we needed to be for both parts of the day.
Our day started out with torrential rain showers, so we were obviously a bit worried about how the day was going to go. Wet and miserable was the expectation and our guide Charlie made no bones about letting us know we were GOING to get muddy. But he did it with a great sense of humor and pointed us towards where we could buy bandannas and protective glasses if we felt so inclined. Once we got in our buggies though, it was time for some fun! It was my boyfriend's birthday and I decided not to be THAT girl and let him go for it, lol. We hit every puddle as fast as he could, lol. We were soaked! It was awesome. Everyone in our group was covered head to toe. The cenote stop was super fun. Many people jumped in and they got some great pictures of the group. The stop for coffee and cocoa wasn't my thing, but the people were nice and my group made some good purchases.
Charlie was again our amazing guide/bartender this time on our catamaran/snorkel cruise. We had a blast again. Fun music, fun people and a gorgeous cruise on the ocean. The sand bar stop with all of the other boats that go there in the evening was something to behold. I can't even explain it. It was like a gigantic party in like 2 feet of water. I would definitely recommend this package to anyone that is up for a day of fun off your resort. Very worth the time and money.
So glad we did this - made the trip!

A pretty good day! Buggies and beaches!

Trip got started late with hotel pickups running behind but we did receive notice via trip advisor notification. Once we arrived to the buggy business we signed safety consent and then it took a very confusing and lengthy time to get ready to go. We travelled in the buggies to a cave and were able to go for a refreshing dip in the water. Back in the buggies and travelled to a coffee/cacao plantation where we sampled goods and could purchases offerings from this area. We travelled by buggy to a beautiful beach and went for a swim. Overall the buggy portion was fun but there were numerous breakdowns but all quickly attended to. This ended the morning…back to our own resorts for lunch. In the afternoon we were picked up and taken to our snorkelling adventure. The snorkelling was good but I wish it could have been longer. We hopped back on the boat and went to an enclosure where some guests had payed to swim with stingrays and nurse sharks. Last leg of the afternoon took us to an area where we parked in shallow waters and enjoyed some swimming and music and good times. There was plenty of adult bevies and snacks. We had a good time but wish there would have been more snorkelling.

The dune buggies was amazing had a great time staff was amazing and helped every way they could. The only thing I didn’t like which had nothing to do with the staff of the dune buggies we made a stop where they make coffee chocolate and green tea, they sold souvenirs there and were on top of you to buy something trying to force it if you don’t say no and walk away you’ll probably spend a lot.

Dune buggie yes, snorkel..no
Janelle_W
, Dec 2021
I’m giving this three stars because the Dune buggies were amazing. Definitely a highlight of our trip. My husband and I shared a buggie and took turns aiming for every mud hole in site lol we were coed in mud! Charlie was a great Guide, very accommodating and fun. Note: you do not get to dune buggie on the beach so don’t let that picture become an expectation lol
The snorkel is not a snorkel, and they do not provide flippers as advertised. So if you are not a strong swimmer this pit stop is not for you. We were in the water to snorkel a total of 7mins. That’s it. 7. The water was pretty choppy which didn’t bother me and my husband because we are pros at snorkeling but those with no flippers had a very hard time. The tour can’t control the current of the water but to advertise as a snorkel trip and then only be in the water for 7 mins was VERY disappointing. Then there was another group that boarded our boat from another boat and they had a swim with sharks stop for 30 mins! So I paid for snorkel and fins and got cheated while having the pleasure of sitting on the boat and watching another unexpected group enjoy their excursion. The fresh water stop was more like murky river water… not the crystal clear Carribean water you would expect. Louis, our guide for the snorkel was a wonderful host and we did have a blast dancing with him on the boat. He made every effort to apologize for the Mia leading advertisement and made the effort to celebrate our birthdays. He definitely helped turn the tide of this excursion and we still had a good time on the boat. I recommend the dune buggie if you can find that alone cause this definitely wasn’t a snorkel trip which is something I look forward to every time I travel.

Terrible Transportation
Ravan_S
, Nov 2021
This was an amazing experience. We enjoyed the beach, swimming in the cenote, the ATV rides, swimming with the shark and sting rays, and the dance party that occurred towards the end of the catamaran ride. My biggest complaint about this experience was the transportation.
We had an all day excursion. We were supposed to be picked up at 7:30. We rushed eating to get to the lobby 7:30 because our hotel dining hall opened at 7. However the truck didn't come to get us until 8 am. There was also a 1 hour turn around between lunch and our second pick up. Again we rushed to wash the mud off of our skin, eat lunch and to get to the lobby boy 1:30. Again, our transportation was 30-40 minutes late. After our tour ended, the tour guide came and called everyone's hotel. There was a couple missing, but we left anyway. We dropped off one person. Then our driver got a call and turned the bus around. At first I was the only person who noticed and asked why we turned around. The driver ignored me. Then, another passenger went to the front of the bus to ask why we turned around. The driver said he forgot someone at the catamaran location. This was after 20 minutes of driving, so then we drove back 20 additional minutes to pick up the missing couple. Which made us late for dinner. Over all, I was annoyed with thr transportation. If this is how it has to be then include breakfast and lunch on the trip and we can figure out our own dinner.
Lots of Fun, Adventure and Mamajuana

My girlfriend and I were on a romantic getaway to Punta Cana and booked this experience a couple weeks before our trip. Buggy adventure was fun and informative, got an excellent opportunity to get affordable and authentic souvenirs for family and friends. Catamaran experience was also very exciting, lots of dancing and mamajuana haha. Luis was a fantastic tour guide - we got him for both the buggies and the catamaran! He was kind, hilarious and went the extra mile to make sure everyone was having the best time. I would 10/10 recommend this excursion - you get to meet awesome people and have the opportunity to purchase professional photos at the end which you can negotiate for an affordable and fair price.
Luis is GREAT !

Love the ATV, Hated the Snorkeling.
Jonathan_C
, Oct 2021
First off I want folk to know that this booking is 2 separate companies. I was under the impression that we would ATV and then go to the boat with the same folk but instead these are 2 separate excursions just bundled together. So if you have questions regarding either you will be SoL as neither knows about the other.
The ATV ride was awesome. It rained during the tour but no one was upset at getting wet nor muddy. We even had one of our buggies break down and they gave us a new one. 1 thing to note is you WILL be hassled at every location to make purchases, so make sure to learn to say NO to these people.
We also did the snorkeling which was kind of a miss for us. We expected to be taken out to a nice snorkeling area but was taken to a place where the water was really rough which the cruise director advised to not swim in if you weren't a strong swimmer. I assumed this meant we would go to another location that was safer for people but that didn't occur. We went to another spot that was murky water which you couldn't snorkel in and was basically their just to swim in. The boat trip quickly turned from a Snorkeling cruise to a party boat which would of been fine if me and my wife booked that type of cruise but instead we were let down by the lack of viable snorkeling to be had. Probably wouldn't book that boat tour again.

If you see an Experience Award Winner label, the award is based on average review ratings, share of bookings with a review, and number of bookings through Viator over a 12-month period.
The importance of any one factor over any other in a sort order varies, and the balance is constantly being reviewed and adjusted. We’re always updating our systems and testing new ways to refine and improve your results to make them as relevant as possible to meet your needs.
