Make your way to your morning or afternoon swamp adventure in Slidell, Louisiana. Here, find Honey Island Swamp, a wildlife preserve that is one of the last protected wetlands in Louisiana. Board the custom‐made, open‐air boat and set off on an educational ride. Holding a max of 22 passengers, this boat offers a more intimate experience as your group quietly winds through narrow swamp passages and gets you closer to native wildlife.

Your expert guide’s commentary makes this an unforgettable wildlife‐spotting expedition through myth‐laden Louisiana terrain. Glide along the water, viewing the lush greenery and abundance of wild animals, including alligators, owls, raccoons, snakes, black bears, bald eagles, and wild boar. True animal enthusiasts will love getting an up‐close (and interactive) look at some of the ‘friendlier’ animals. Get great photos and learn more about the famous regional alligator, who can tip the scales at 1,000 pounds (453 kg). Also learn about the culture and ingenuity of the Cajun people who have—for more than two centuries—inhabited this area and used it as a source of food and medicine. Your guide takes you by a secluded Cajun village that can only be accessed by boat. Throughout the ride, hear stories about the bayou lifestyle, as well as information about the region’s passionate wetland preservation efforts.

Your fun and enlightening boat tour returns to Slidell. This tour does not include transport to or from New Orleans.
Itinerary
Pass By:
Lake Pontchartrain
From New Orleans, take a short drive to Slidell and you'll reach Lake Pontchartrain and the Honey Island Swamp, a wildlife preserve that is one of the last protected wetlands in Louisiana.
Stop At:
Honey Island Swamp
Your guide welcomes you aboard a custom-made 22-passenger flat-bottom boat. The smaller sized, quiet boat can fit through narrow passages in the swamp foliage so that you see more and get closer to wildlife. It’s the ideal way to take in the lush environment of Cajun country. As your guide explains the history of Louisiana’s wetlands and swamp ecosystem, be on the lookout for resident wildlife including alligators, raccoons, owls, wild boar, nutria, snakes, turtles, black bears, bald eagles and many other bird species. Get a close look at some wild gators as your guide shares facts about the toothy beasts, who can weigh up to 1,000 pounds (453 kg). Their ancestors once roamed the earth with the dinosaurs and scientists estimate that they have existed for more than 150 million years. Glide safely through the fertile swamplands, learning about Cajun culture and how local people have utilized the swamp for food, homes, and medicine from your guide. You even see an authentic Cajun village that is only accessible by boat. Gain an understanding of why the wetlands are slowly disappearing and about the efforts being made to preserve Louisiana's natural treasures. After a fascinating 2-hour boat tour on Honey Island Swamp, your guide returns you to shore. You can then make your own way to your next destination.

This is our second swamp tour with Cajun Encounters - the first was 5 years ago in summer when we saw 40-50 alligators. This time we went out with Captain Luka who is an amazing story teller and very fun!! We didn’t see any alligators due to the cold, nor did we see any hogs, but the stories he shared, telling us about life in the swamp and the native plants & animals, hurricane Katrina experiences, blackened fish recipes and food recommendations were very enjoyable and made up for not seeing the alligators. definitely recommend this company & tour!

A nice family outing

Friendly knowledgeable guide - he even showed us the neighborhood on the water where he grew up.. he obviously loves the area and sharing his knowledge of the area and its flora and fauna. Swamp is eerily beautiful in winter. Kids got to see and pet a small gator in the shop and have their questions answered.

Our guide was awesome and knew his stuff and provided a safe and fun experience for us. It was two hours as scheduled and was right on time. The only thing I would say could be improved is the staff in the gift shop was not very friendly and I had to go out of my way to be noticed when it was time to check in even after more then one staff made eye contact with me and knew I was there.

We had Luka for a guide and he was FANTASTIC. We felt like we were in his living room having a fun visit. He even gave us a great suggestion for a good restaurant for our dinner.

Disappointing

The light through the swamp on the 2:45pm tour was great. However, the swamp seemed dead, only one bird, a couple of turtles and a possum. Keep in mind that alligators do not like cold weather so winter tours are a bit hit and miss.
