Board your morning coach in the French Quarter and enjoy watching the city wake up as you travel to the neighboring Garden District. This area, which now boasts some of the most splendid, preserved antebellum mansions in the South, was once occupied by multiple plantations.

As you stroll through manicured streets and admire colorful facades and cast‐iron fences, learn how the area was slowly appropriated by wealthy Americans in the 19th century who sought distinction from the French population in the French Quarter.  Your guide complements the spectacular urban scenery with legends of the Garden District’s past and present residents like local author Anne Rice, actor John Goodman, and famous football player Archie Manning.

The final leg of your walking tour is Lafayette Cemetery, one of New Orleans oldest surviving—and still operating—‘cities of the dead’. Spanning just one square block, this mysterious site houses more than 7,000 people in tombs and mausoleums. Hear about the distinctive above‐ground burial system and some of the cemetery’s famous interred—both factual and fictitious.

Return by coach to your starting point in the French Quarter.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Garden District
Your tour begins in the French Quarter, where you'll board a comfortable, air-conditioned coach and travel to the quieter and more genteel Garden District. This elegant historical area, known for its marvelous examples of Greek Revival and Italianate architecture and lovely gardens, was once the site of a number of plantations. Learn from your guide how in the 19th century it was sold off piece by piece primarily to wealthy Americans who built the lavish mansions that still dominate this district. See mansions belonging to local author Anne Rice, actress Sandra Bullock, actor John Goodman, and former New Orleans Saints' quarterback — and father of Peyton and Eli — Archie Manning. Admire an unusual cast-iron fence resembling a row of cornstalks and learn the legend of how a southern colonel had it made in the mid-1800s to comfort wife, homesick for Iowa.

Garden District Walking

The tour of the Davis house interior was the most interesting part of the tour. It was difficult to get a good view of many of the houses on the tour due to shrubbery or garden walls. We had expected to visit Lafayette Cemetery #1, but it was closed for maintenance. It would have been nice to know that on advance. The tour guide was informative.

Beautiful Garden District

Midge was very informed, interesting, and likable. Easy to find the starting point. Garden District is beautiful, got to see the inside of one of the mansions, that was a highlight. Cemetery was closed for improvements, so maybe another cemetery could have been included. Otherwise a great tour of that neighborhood, and an informative drive back through the French Quarter!

Our tour guide Betsy W. was assume. She gave a great tour, great info and answered everyone’s questions. And based on the burial process in NOLA, there were plenty of questions.

A stroll through New Orleans Garden District

We had a beautiful morning for a gentle stroll through the Garden District on New Orleans. Our guide, Bill was very informative about the houses he stopped at and the history of the area. Part of the tour is a visit to the Women's Opera Guild Home which is open for the people on this tour. We were lucky enough to see the house all dressed for Christmas. The rooms we saw were stunning.

Beautiful homes; lots of history

Our guide was very experienced with this tour and imparted a lot of New Orleans history about the Garden District and its various past and present residents. The homes were beautiful though we viewed them all from the street, with the exception of one home. Unfortunately the cemetery was closed so we were unable to tour there. Our guide did give us the history of the cemetery and explained how multiple generations could all be "buried" in the same tomb. It was an interesting morning and we were pleased that we had taken this tour. Note: no refreshments were provided as is stated in the tour description--you may want to bring a bottle of water with you.

This was a good intro to Garden District homes and architecture. Tour guide, Midge, was knowledgeable and welcomed questions from participants. We toured the interior of one home and received an in dept history of that location. Cemetery was unfortunately closed for repairs. Bus service to and fron District was a bonus. All in all, a productive learning experience.

We met at the Steamboat Natchez dock in the French quarter and were shuttled to the Garden District. Our guide was very educated and he gave us detailed history every moment of the tour. You see all the mega-mansions of the rich and famous (dead and currently alive). We even got to go inside one. The Lafayette cemetery was closed for filming, but we got to peek through a bit. I chose to not get back on the bus and walked around a bunch more and checked out the funky, local restaurants on Magazine St.

Great to see the architecture and history of the area. The only disappointing thing was it was advertised to go into the Lafayette Cemetery but it was closed while we were there.

Judy was a great tour guide. I was so happy I took a guided tour instead of walking around the neighborhood by myself. Also this is the inly tour that allows you to go into one of the homes. Definitely worth the money.

Our tour guide, Sandi W, was fantastic. Shared her extensive knowledge with us and her enthusiasm for life in NOLA which increased our enjoyment of the tour. We (all four of us) would be happy to take additional tours with Sandi. And, she made certain, as we were talking on a hot day, that everyone drank plenty of water.

Beautiful and fascinating walk

The Garden District is a section of New Orleans with absolutely beautiful homes, all built long ago, some even before the Civil War. It was fun to see the homes of Sandra Bullock, John Goodman, and the childhood home of Peyton and Eli Manning. The lawns were lush and beautifully landscaped. On this specific tour, we were able to go into one of these magnificent homes. The furnishings and decor were original and ornate. A bus then transported us to Lafayette Cemetery. Our guide was so interesting and knowledgeable. She answered questions you didn’t even know that you had. I’m so happy that I booked this tour as I got to see an area of New Orleans I knew nothing about and came away with a much deeper understanding of New Orleans history and culture.

Sandy is a knowledgeable guide. Her stories of her own southern upbringing and experiences and her sense of humor made for an entertaining and creditable tour. Our only disappointment was that Lafayette Cemetery was closed the day of our tour (Good Friday), so we did not get as much information as we desired and had to make a trip back to the cemetery on our own.

Everyone in our group thought this tour was perfect. A quick bus ride from the French Quarter to the Garden District. The tour of the district, the cemetery and celebrity homes, was just the right amount of history, education and entertainment. Daniel was a great guide!

Daniel was a great tour guide and we got a little extra by being able to tour one of the mansions. He was very well educated on the history of the Garden District. I would highly recommend this tour!
