Coyoacán, National University, and Frida Kahlo Museum

After meeting your guide in downtown Mexico City, your full-day tour kicks off at Coyoacán, which dates back to pre-Hispanic times. Admire 16th-century mansions along cobblestone streets, and learn about one of Mexico City’s oldest neighborhoods from your informative guide. Today, the area has blossomed into a cultural nexus for intellectuals and artists.

Visit the National Autonomous University of Mexico, built-in 1551, and check out the UNESCO-listed Central Campus, a collaboration that came together in 1952 involving more than 60 engineers, architects, and artists, including muralists Diego Rivera and Juan O´Gorman.

Next, head over to Jardín Hidalgo, and enjoy a lunch break here (own expense) in the garden area boasting restaurants, studios, and craft stalls. Next, enter the church of San Juan Bautista with your guide and admire the paintings inside.

A fan of Frida Kahlo? At Coyoacán Casa Azul (Blue House), or the Frida Kahlo Museum, immerse yourself in the tumultuous life and iconic artwork of this beloved artist. It is here where Kahlo lived and loved with her husband, Diego Rivera. Enjoy an hour of free time in the museum.

Xochimilco

Your Mexico City sightseeing adventure continues at Xochimilco, located 17 miles (28 km) south of Mexico City, a waterway network of floating gardens of flowers. An ecological reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage site, this valley was a lake during Aztec times. To get around the scarcity of arable soil back then, the people developed chinampas, islands with floating reed mats with soil.

Spend about an hour drifting peacefully along the canals and admiring the chinampas from your colorful, flat-bottomed boat called a trajinera. Hear festive music from other boats, occupied by families and visitors celebrating weddings, birthdays and other happy occasions.

As your boatman moves the vessel along by pulling a pole through the water, pass other painted vessels transporting passengers and check out boat-vendors selling fresh food. Enjoy an array of dishes and drinks for purchase, including roasted corn, mole, mixiote (barbequed meat), tacos, carnitas, quesadillas, pulque (milk-colored alcoholic beverage) and micheladas (Mexican beer-based cocktail).

Your day tour ends with drop-off back at the central meeting points.

Floating Gardens of Xochimilco

Back in Aztec times, this valley was once a lake. As your boatman moves the vessel along by pulling a pole through the water, hear from your guide about the characteristic boats, originally hollowed from logs and once used for transportation throughout Mexico. Pass by other painted vessels transporting passengers and check out the boat vendors selling fresh food. Hungry? Taste a variety of dishes and drinks, such as mole, mixiote (barbequed meat), roasted corn, quesadillas, tacos, carnitas, pulque (milk-colored alcoholic beverage) and micheladas (Mexican beer-based cocktail). (Food and drink purchases are at your own expense.) Hear music like mariachi drifting from other boats, occupied by families and visitors celebrating birthdays, baptisms, weddings, or simply a good time. Manuel was a great tour guide and very knowledgeable. The stop to the National University of Mexico was a plus, becuase I did want to see the Puma stadium, even though we didn’t go inside, it was still a plus. I would if loved to spend a bit more exploring Coyoacan, but the time we did have, I was i was able to explore the main part of the area where there were restaurants and shops. It was a great tour.

Great tour of Xochimilco

Had a great time exploring Coyoacan and Xochimilco! The guide thought that the museum was closed yet no one mentioned this to me prior to the start of the day, so there was no refund for the museum ticket, yet when we arrived at the museum it was open, but it was the end of the day so we couldn't go. They brought us to a silver shop which felt like a tourist trap as a make good, but I could've done without it. Thankfully the day turned a corner when we got to Xochimilco which was absolutely worth the weird start and the guide brought us drinks and it turned out to be an amazing day. Definitely worth it, skip the silver shop if you can!

The tour guides were...

The tour guides were friendly and informative about the history of all the places we went to. However I found the tour to be a little too long. We spent a very long time at the small silver shop and 2 other markets. They were nice markets/stores but as I had no interest to buy anything, I found it boring. I also opted out of the Frida Kahlo museum but instead of ending the tour early, the rest of us who didn’t go to the museum had to wait for 2+ hours while the others were in the museum. At that point I was exhausted and wanted to leave but we had to just wander around the streets with not much to do. Xochimilco was extremely crowded. There was a good atmosphere with all the music and singing but it felt a bit excessive at times as I prefer quieter environments. I wish we were told in advance how much the food would cost (200 pesos), as it was a lot more expensive than a typical meal in Mexico.

Kevin was a terrific guide--he was knowledgeable, friendly, and he moved quickly and easily between English and Spanish without waiting for long periods to let each group know what was going on. The bus was comfortable and the pacing was good (mixing history and moving around with a lovely boat ride, drinks, and good food, then wonderful art and also good snacks). A great tour.

Excellent Tour Guide, lots of time on the bus..... sites definitely worth seeing.....

This was an excellent tour despite a change in the pickup time an hour earlier and the bit of a disappointment with the barge/canal portion of the tour in Xochimilco. The Amigo Tours guide, Kevin, made the tour interesting and had great commentary throughout at all locations. Not shown in the pre-tour information was a stop at the University of Mexico to view the art on the stadium and one of the campus buildings. The tour lasted about 12 hours in total due to the driving distance between locations. The highlight of the tour was the Frida Kahlo Museum tour and the display of her art in her original home in Coyoacan. The least favorite portion of the tour was the "bumper boats/barge" experience on the canal in Xochimilco. The experience was advertised as being romantic and relaxing on a canal.... far from it due to the chaos of loading, launching, and continually bumping into other barges. The food served was twice the price expected for a lunch of beans and carne. The beer prices were ok and Kevin (tour guide) provided a bottle of tequila to be shared with the 15 members of the tour on the boat. Due to the conditions of how things were cooked and served, we suspect one member of our group experienced some gastro-intestinal issues since they were the only one of our group of four to eat the very spicy hot sauce. The other three of us were fine. Try to go to Xochimilco in a very small group, certainly no larger than 6-8 people on one of the boats..... worth seeing, but chaotic for our group of four (as part of a larger group of about 45 total spread between three barges).

Make sure you got the right tour!!!

I booked this tour especially to see the Frida Khalo Museum. I checked in with the tour operator the day before and was told this tour did not include the museum. Although the title clearly stated it does!!! So make sure you got the right one. Apparently there is an option to choose, which I didn't see. Another one of those hidden things. I ended up not doing the tour, told the tour operator but never heard back.

Not worth the time

Do yourself a big favor and skip this package and just do the places individually. The first two hours was nothing but going to a souvenir shop and bathroom. The Murals stop could have been done in 30 minutes, three Murals about 60 minutes standing as every corner was described.

DO NOT MAKE THIS MISTAKE

It was the worst trip we have ever been to. Is says it includes Frida khalo museum in the name of the trip and when placing reservations there’s no way to choose between any options, but on the spot you find out from the tour guide that your trip doesn’t include that museum. It happed to half of the group, we were “kindly asked” to take care of our time one our own whilst the second half of the group went with the guides inside the museum. The tour guides barely spoke English so mostly they repeated one fact for 3 to 4 times to fill the space. We heard other groups guides at the same time and they were far more informational. This tour is designed to force you to buy souvenirs or food/drinks at spots that are run by acquaintances of the tour guides: neither cheep nor good compared to other vendors. The guide “warned” us not to buy from wherever we wanted as it was “plastic and from china” but at the spot we were forced to stop at items were exactly the same only much more expensive. For example clothes had tags cut by hand to leave only cleaning instructions but to omit the origin of the product. This is a fraud. The trip was badly managed, a lot of wasted time on “waiting for the rest of the group”. The AC in the bus was not functional for first few hours, it was more of a sauna than a bus, when the group became edgy about it, the AC “magically” started working. By the half of it we were tired, bored and hungry, so we decided to leave the trip early and take our own taxi home.
