The Basics

Butchart Gardens are a popular spot to visit from Victoria, Vancouver, and even Seattle, either on a gardens tour or combined with a whale-watching cruise, sightseeing tour, or seaplane flight and three-course dinner in the park. As you make your way through the different garden areas—from rose-covered paths to the dramatic Sunken Garden—you can admire blooming bulbs in springtime, head out on the dahlia walk during summer, admire floral displays in gorgeous fall colors, or take in the Japanese-inspired garden in the winter months.

Enjoyable, the gardens are spectacular
Greg is a great story teller and local historian. He helped make the van ride a little shorter. It’s a lot of travel time but we’ll worth it.

Awesome Day

Victoria and Butchart Gardens Tour from Vancouver
Dan was a terrific driver and tour guide. The bus was clean and comfortable. Butchart Gardens and Victoria were fabulous. Loved the ferry. Long but worthwhile day We got our money's worth. Would suggest the driver ask noisy, chatty people to whisper. It was sometimes hard to hear Dan, and he gave an excellent commentary along the way.

The Butchart Garden's were impressive. For those that might be impressed by logistics, the efficiency of the loading and unloading of the ferry is an experience.

2-Day Victoria & Butchart Gardens Tour with Overnight at the Inn at Laurel Point
Liked the ferry ride from Vancouver to Victoria. The Butchart gardens were beautiful. We were at the gardens for 2 hours, wish we had an hour more. Enjoyed walking around downtown Victoria and the harbor. The Inn at Laurel Point was very nice.

2-day Victoria and Butchart Gardens Tour with Overnight at The Fairmont Empress
Good tour but could have been excellent with additional time at Butchart Gardens (90 min was actually 75 min considering unloading and loading of Bus with 40+ guests), and better communication from tour operator on actual agenda, info on hotel, and info on flight back to Vancouver.

Victoria and Butchart Gardens Tour from Vancouver
Smooth pickup at the pre-arranged Hotel downtown Vancouver. Tour guide David O’Brien was professional, competent driver, teacher, entertainer and all around good guy. Well worth the price! Butchart Gardens is off the charts! See the Sunken Gardens there. Cherry gelato at the gardens for the win.

3-Hour Butchart Gardens and City Tour
Richard was the proprietor and guide. He was very warm and friendly and shared his wealth of knowledge and neat stories of Victoria. His nearly one if a kind automobile (Bently Rolls Royce) was very comfortable and clean. Richard took us to every corner of the beautiful city. We will definitely ask him to give us a tour the next time we are in Victoria. Thank you, Richard!

When to Get There

Butchart Gardens are open year-round, and during peak season (July through August) they get quite crowded between 11am and 3pm. Arrive at opening and you’ll be rewarded with few crowds and beautiful lighting for your photographs. On summer evenings, the gardens host fireworks displays every Saturday night in July and August. In December, the garden’s Waterwheel Square is converted into an outdoor ice-skating rink, complete with Christmas decorations and lights.

Butchart’s Themed Gardens

There are six themed gardens here: the Sunken Garden, the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden, the Italian Garden, the Concert Lawn Walk, and the Mediterranean Garden. The original Sunken Garden is a must-see, home to annuals, flowering trees, and unique shrubs, although kids will love the hand-carved wooden carousel along the Concert Lawn Walk. Meanwhile, the serene Japanese Garden invites contemplation and the small Mediterranean Garden has drought-tolerant plants from areas of the world with climates similar to Victoria’s.
