The Basics

The Palace of Doges is a significant historical site in Venice, with many travelers arriving to hear about the strict rule of the Venice Doges from an expert local guide. The site is most often visited on a two- to five-hour Venice tour and can be combined with a stop at St Mark's Basilica, once the private chapel of the Doges. Inside the palace, admire the many paintings by Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese, and climb the narrow staircases to visit the Doge's apartments and the prison cells, as well as the ducal notary. Outside the palace is the Bridge of Sighs and the beautiful columns along the piazzetta.

The popular Secret Itineraries tour allow visitors, accompanied by a guide, into chambers of the palace not open to the general public. You'll see the secret chancellery where the delicate work of governing was done, the secret archives, the torture room, and the cell from which the famous writer Giacomo Casanova made his escape.

Perfect introduction to Venice.
A perfect way on our first day in Venice to get an overview of the history and beauty of Venice. An advantage is to skip the line into Doge’s palace. Our guide, Iole from TakeWalks.com displayed much knowledge and enthusiasm of Venice. She also noticed that my husband was having some difficulty with stairs and got permission for him to use an elevator in the palace.

Doge's Palace and St Mark's Basilica Tour
The guide was excellent; very knowledgeable of Venice and the history behind it. The skip the line at the Doge's palace was valuable, but recent COVID restrictions made the skip line line impossible for St. Mark's Basilica (for all tour guides in town). Still, the wait to get into the Basilica was not long, and felt even shorter as our guide continue to provide us information during the wait. I would book again if I return to Venice.

St Mark's Basilica After-Hours Group or Private Tour with Optional Doge's Palace
Our guide was amazing! She knew so much and answered all the questions because of her wide knowledge on art history and the history of Venice. I really recommend doing the doge’s palace tour as well because getting a narrative throughout such a beautiful/historic building made it so much more interesting. Also seeing the cathedral privately was amazing!!!! One of the best guided tours I’ve been on.

St Mark's Basilica After-Hours Group or Private Tour with Optional Doge's Palace
Viator’s after-hours tours are always a great value, and our time with Susan was a delight. She shared her deep knowledge of art history and her dry wit - a fantastic combination.

Doge's Palace and St. Mark's Basilica Guided Tour
Lara, tour guide, was prompt, funny and informative. Really showed her love for Venice in perfect English and kept us entertained. One part of our tour did get disrupted as the Basillica closed early, but tour company notified me in advance and issued a partial credit as well as an apology. Very satisfied.

Venice Walking Tour plus Skip the Lines Doge's Palace and St Mark's Basilica Tours
Venice is just opening up so it was interesting taking this tour at a time when there were no crowds. I did the first part of the tour by myself and we were joined by 4 later. The guide was friendly and knowledgeable with good English language skills.

Doge's Palace and St Mark's Basilica Tour
This tour is strange under covid conditions but great efforts were made to keep people safe with windows open, one way systems etc. The guide was vary clear and covered well what was a big subject. At 90 minutes this was an ideal condensed tour for people who do not have time for the usual longer one and do not want too much detail.

Our tour guide was great! She kept the tour interesting, engaging, and entertaining. We enjoyed both parts of the tour. The tour ran almost 3 hours but we appreciated the time she took to explain everything important.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Booking a St. Mark's museum pass allows access to the three museums in St. Mark's Square.

  • The palace is wheelchair accessible, and an audio guide is available for rental.

  • The majority of palace tours include Venice hotel pickup and dropoff, although a few tours offer departures from Florence and Milan.

A Haunting History

Death sentences were declared between the 9th and 10th columns outside the palace, while executions were carried out between the freestanding columns in the piazzetta next to the lagoon; even today Venetians won't walk between them. A final chance at life was offered if the accused were able to walk around the edge of the third column on the seaward side of the palace.
