The Basics

The only way to explore the Blue Cave is by boat, and the most convenient way to visit is as part of a guided tour of the surrounding islands. Full-day speedboat tours leave from Split, Trogir, and Hvar, and often take in the five islands of Vis, Hvar, Bisevo, Ravnik, and Budikovac, stopping at attractions such as Stiniva Cove, Smokova Bay's beach, and the Green Cave. For a more personalized experience, opt for a private or small-group tour.

Wonderful day
Our tour was just as advertised. But they didn't mention how exceptional Captain Mike and Dora would be. They made sure everyone was comfortable and well cared for. Great stories and info and all around fun atmosphere. The ride is a bit fast, windy and bumpy, but the islands are definitely worth seeing. The wine tasting was one of the highlights. Such an authentic experience! I'd love to spend another day with Mike and Dora.

Blue Cave and Hvar Tour - 5 Islands Tour from Split and Trogir
Overall, it was was amazing tour. We didn’t get to go the Blue Cave but was substituted with the Green cave. Toni and Nina were amazing guides. They allowed us to go explore and had plenty time to do so. The highlight at the end of the day was seeing dolphins on the way back to Split. I would highly recommend this company and tour.

Blue Cave and Surrounding Islands Boat Trip from Split
I usually get seasick but had zero issues with it on this trip! Our guides, Andréa and Luka, we’re phenomenal, the boat was fast and comfortable. The best stop in my opinion Stiniva Cove was the absolute highlight. A few tips! - don’t sit at the front of the boat, the waves can be brutal - bring water shoes as the beaches are rocky - bring cash for bars and tips! There is an ATM at Hvar stop

Unique Blue Cave and 5 islands tour from Trogir and Split
The Blue Cave and 5 islands tour was the highlight of our stay in Split. Toni, our skipper from Mayer Charter, was awesome. Toni was personable and provided great information about all of the islands and sites visited. We had plenty of time to swim and enjoy each of the stops. He also gave great recommendations for dining, shopping and the Split area in general.

Blue Cave, Hvar & 5 Islands Adventure
Even though the entrance to the blue cave was closed, our tour was great! We had plenty of time to swim and relax and snorkel. Music and boat ride were awesome. Would’ve liked some more facts about the islands we were visiting.

Private Blue Cave and Hvar - 5 Islands Tour
Mario was a great Captain/Tour Guide. He is very professional, knowledgeable, patient and gracious. He picked us up and dropped us off right in front of our hotel. Mario took us to several different swimming spots that the kids loved. When the company found out that the Blue Cave would be closed on our originally scheduled day, they contacted us and offered to change the tour date to the following day. Very proactive and thoughtful. Thanks to them we got to experience the Blue Cave and it was worth it!

Blue Cave, Hvar & 5 Islands Adventure
We had a really great time on this tour! It’s good if you want to see several islands in a short amount of time. Our tour guide and skipper were great and gave us plenty of time in each spot. I was afraid the day would feel too rushed but it felt like a good amount of time. FYI because I don’t remember this being clear in the description - you ride in a little speed boat just big enough for everyone to sit. Be prepared to swim to the beach and wear appropriate shoes, or be ready to walk on pebbles. This is all part of the experience and was really fun/totally worth it. Just come prepared with a beach towel and a good jacket to block the wind on the boat (others weren’t so prepared in our group). I’d recommend!

Blue Cave and Hvar Tour - 5 Islands Tour from Split and Trogir
We had a wonderful experience on our 5 island blue cave tour with Mayer Charters. We had friends visiting back to back so we went on this tour 2 weeks in a row. It is a definite must do! Both of our guests loved it! We went with 2 different companies, because I want to compare. I’m glad I did because Maurer Charters was a much better experience. Our boat was set up like we were riding a wave runner with a seat that you straddle and a bar you can hold on to. When I first saw it I thought it would be uncomfortable but I was wrong. Our boat was defiantly the fastest boat on the sea that day. We were passing all the other boats and leaving them in our wake. The blue cave could be quite crowded with up to a 2 hour wait, so it’s important that you’re the first one there. It was a windy day with a rough sea but with our wave runner seats it was no problem jumping through the waves. Our tour guides Toni and Ivan were the best! We highly recommend Mayer Charter for this tour. Our first tour with a different company had a slower boat and only 1 tour guide. Toni told us Mayer Charter boats were custom made for this tour. They were made for safety , speed and fun. And our experience was just that! All on the boat were laughing the entire E ticket ride. It was so fun! They also offered a life jacket for one of the members on our boat who could not swim, water proof jackets for those who did not to get wet from the ocean spray, snorkeling equipment and plenty of water bottles. Another plus for Mayer Charters. The other company only offered water bottles, We have more company coming next month. We defiantly will going again. You get to do and see so much in one day. Highly recommend. It is worth the cost

  • Swimming in the Blue Cave is prohibited but most tours offer a chance to swim or snorkel at other locations, so be sure to bring your swimsuit, towel, and sun protection.

  • Many tours are suitable for wheelchair users, but it's best to check in advance.

How to Get There

The Blue Cave is located in Balun Bay on the Croatian island of Bisevo along the Adriatic Coast. The only way to reach the island is by small boat from the island of Vis. From Split, it's roughly a 2.5-hour journey by speedboat to Vis, followed by a short transfer to Komiza on the island's west coast, which is the departure point for official Bisevo boats.

When to Get There

Weather permitting, it's possible to visit the Blue Cave year-round, but the most popular time is during the summer months of June to September. Visiting in high season means you will likely have a wait time of up to an hour to enter the cave. Low season visitors will probably be able to head straight inside, although fewer choices for tours and boat departures are available at this time of year. For the most spectacular views and photographs, plan your trip between 11am and 12pm, when the sunlight hits the water at just the right angle.

The Natural Phenomenon of the Blue Cave

One of 26 natural caves dotted around Bisevo island, the Blue Cave was accessible only to divers until 1884, when an artificial opening was created to allow small boats to cruise through. At certain times of the day, the mesmerizing light, created by sunlight refracting through the water and bouncing off the white limestone floor, appears to coat the entire cave in iridescent blue.
