The Basics

The county of Wiltshire is brimming with Neolithic sites. Day tours departing from London, Glastonbury, and Salisbury typically combine visits to Stonehenge, Avebury Henge, Woodhenge, and West Kennet Long Barrow, which are all part of the Stonehenge and Avebury UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other day tours combine a trip to the Avebury site with visits to picturesque English cities, towns, and villages, such as Georgian Bath or medieval Lacock, known for its wood-framed houses and stone cottages.

Stonehenge, Avebury Stone circles & Cotswolds. Small group day tour from Bath
Richard was the perfect tour guide. Friendly, knowledgeable, congenial, and with a sense of humour. Everything you want in a guide and more. He even managed to arrange for the rain to stop!!! Everything ran like clockwork, we saw everything as advertised with plenty time to explore and enjoy the sites, with a lovely stop for lunch. I would highly recommend this tour if you’re visiting Bath.

An Archaeologist Shares His Knowledge

Archaeologist-led Stonehenge, Salisbury and Avebury Small Group tour from London
Tom was an amazing guide and thoroughly explained the history of Stonehenge and Avebury. On the ride to the sites, he shared his wealth of knowledge about the history of the area and made sure the tour group had a good base understanding before we reached our destination. While viewing the site, he continued to explain about how the site was excavated, and took us to specific vantage sites for viewing opportunities. He was engaging and knowledgeable, and I highly recommend the tour.

The tour was good. He showed us basic information. We were able to explore on our own. The tour was primarily for people who appreciate s history and geography. However, it was a very interested in sightseeing. I would recommend this tour when you are in London so that you can learn more about the country side and the wonderful city of bath.

History and Highlights of Avebury

Today in Avebury, only 30 original stones remain standing, though pillars mark the places where other stones once stood. It is thought many of the original stones were removed in the Middle Ages by religious zealots who wanted to wipe out evidence of England’s pagan past. Other stones were pilfered in the 18th century and used to build houses in the vicinity, some of which can still be seen across the fields. Some stones to look out for: the huge Swindon Stone, which has never been toppled, and the Barber Surgeon Stone, under which the skeleton of a man was unearthed. The tools he was buried with indicate that he was a barber-cum-surgeon.
