Jane Austen's House Museum Tours and Activities

At first glance, the red-brick Chawton cottage looks like any other house on its the block, but this unassuming 17th-century building has an important claim to fame for literary fans. The late home of iconic British novelist Jane Austen, who lived there from 1809 until her death in 1817, the building was transformed into the Jane Austen House Museum in 1949 and is now considered a must-see attraction for Austen fans visiting England.
This was the house where Austen finished classic works like Pride and Prejudice and wrote her final three novels, including Emma, and fans can take a peek at her writing desk, bedroom and kitchen, as well as viewing a collection of Austen portraits, memorabilia, manuscripts and personal effects, including items of jewelry. There’s also a library of Austen-related books, a well-stocked gift shop and a garden, where visitors are welcome to picnic.
