Siena Cathedral (Duomo)

Piazza del Duomo, Siena, Tuscany, 53100

The Basics

Appreciate the Siena Cathedral’s wealth of art and architecture on a guided tour. Skip-the-line entrance tickets grant access to the church, crypt, and baptistry (Battistero di San Giovanni), along with the adjacent Piccolomini Library—frescoed by Pinturicchio—and the Museo dell'Opera. Explore the cathedral complex as part of a city walking tour or on a day trip from Florence to Siena, Pisa, and San Gimignano. Inside the cathedral, highlights include the marble pulpit and floor, numerous statues, and the Chigi and Saint John the Baptist chapels.

Siena
The cathedral was magnificent . The process for skip the line tickets was fine , but would be better if we did not have to redeem voucher . I take many of the Viator tours and most of them voucher is ticket.

Great Overview of Siena
Karen_G, Nov 2021
Siena Historic City Walking Tour with Cathedral Option
This was a very comprehensive tour in a relatively short period of time. It was great to have details about Siena that are not in guide books. The guide was very knowledgeable about a variety of subjects and was able to answer questions about different issues. My only criticism was that there was confusion about the meeting place but that was sorted out without losing any of the tour time.

Excellent historical perspective including time line of key events and their link to the existing structures in the town. Clear description of artistic aspects of the contents of the Duomo.

Good if you like tours or want skip-the-line tickets to cathedral

Skip the Line: Siena Duomo and City Walking Tour
We don’t normally go on guided tours, but we missed the opportunity to buy the skip-the-line tickets for the Sienna cathedral. This tour included the desired tickets and was reasonable priced so we booked it. Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. Everyone in our group seemed to enjoy the tour. My elderly mom could hear the guide but struggles with understanding accents so it was hard for her to grasp what the guide was saying. If you enjoy guided tours, this was good.

Excellent and informative tour by Anna, we thoroughly enjoyed our time learning the history, politics, religion and culture of Siena. Anna totally went above and beyond to ensure we saw the best of Siena. I can’t recommend her enough, probably my favorite tour guide in years!!

Eleanor was excellent - warm, friendly and most welcoming. The tour was brilliant - a great mix of history and local culture. Everything was well explained- we learned loads about the city and were blown away by the stories of the Palio and then the inside of the Duomo . A great overall tour - cdo it tomorrow!

Totally worth it for us

Skip-the-Line Siena Cathedral Duomo Complex Entrance Ticket
It costs a little more than purchasing directly through the official museum website, which apparently could not process my US credit card anyway. But is was completely worth it. You have peace of mind knowing you can get in whenever you get there. The line for picking up tickets is much, much shorter. Which saves you quite a bit of time you could be spending inside the sites - and save your sore feet as well!

A must !

Skip-the-Line Siena Cathedral Duomo Complex Entrance Ticket
The skip the line ticket is the way to go. We literally skipped everyone in line to pick up the ticket and 5 minutes later were inside the cathedral. Siena is an adorable town to see with many great shops, restaurants, foody items. The cathedral is beautiful but see it quickly so you have enough time to experience the town. Go early, parking lots fill up. Town walkways are very steep.

Siena is a beautiful city and our guide, Giorgia, was fantastic and presented Siena in a way that only someone born and raised in the contrade can provide.

We want to say a HUGE thank you to Francesca who is a local Sienan and had amazing insights into the city. Extremely knowledgeable and friendly and answered so many questions. The contrada history was particularly important as we ended up going back to the “Owl” museum the following day and made our entire trip. Thank you 10/10

  • While the cathedral is accessible via a secondary entrance to the left of the main staircase, the museum, crypt, and baptistry are not.

When to Get There

Siena's cathedral has a breathtaking graffito floor, one of the most impressive in Italy. There are 56 marble panels of biblical and historical scenes, most hidden behind a protective covering and revealed for just a few weeks each summer. Try to time your visit for this period to view this masterpiece.

Siena Cathedral History and the Museo dell'Opera

The cathedral’s construction began in the early 1200s, and after almost a century, Giovanni Pisano, whose style was heavily influenced by his father, Nicola, completed the beautiful facade. Despite an impressive cathedral, Siena's ambitious ruling families decided in the 14th century to double the size of the existing structure into the New Cathedral (Duomo Nuovo). The plague stopped the plan, and today Museo dell'Opera occupies the only nave that was completed. Museo dell'Opera holds many of the cathedral's most important works of art, including Giovanni Pisano’s statues of prophets and philosophers that once adorned the facade and Duccio di Buoninsegna's Maesta. Duccio di Buoninsegna designed the huge rose window, and the gable’s glittering Venetian mosaics were added in the 19th century.
