The Basics

Located just outside the town of San Pedro de Atacama, Moon Valley is the main attraction for most visitors to the Atacama Desert. Half-day tours typically set out in the afternoon, leaving time to explore the valley’s natural wonders before climbing to the top of Big Dune to watch the sunset over the lunar landscapes below.

Guided tours that include Valley of the Moon often stop at nearby attractions such as Atacama Salt Lake (Salar de Atacama), Salt Mountain Range (Cordillera de la Sal), and the Tres Marías rock formations, while multi-day tours leave time to explore such farther-flung sights as the Red Stone Desert, Cejar Lagoon, and the El Tatio geyser field.

Otherworldly views
Great tour of Valle de La Luna and Valle de Marte! The views are otherworldly. Our guide was knowledgeable of the geological history, spoke English well and had a good sense of humor. Only one short, moderately strenuous hike at the beginning (considering altitude) and leisurely walks after.

3-4 hour tour of the local desert

Valle de La Luna
This tour is not far at all from San Pedro. There is not very much driving, but a fair amount of walking. Most people we talked to did this tour first, on the afternoon of their arrival, as we did also. This is a good introduction to the area and helps to acclimate to the altitude. The sights are very unusual a with a fair amount of variety. We had to start and end our tour early due to some rain possibilities in the afternoon (apparently this is fairly common in January, so be prepared.

Just Beautiful, good bus, good group, very nice guide, but his English should be improved. Except for that it was perfect.

San Pedro de Atacama: Half day Valle de la Luna, Afternoon Tour
Had a fantastic tour at the Valley of the Moon with Jared as guide and Ariel as driver. Jared was extremely knowledgeable on the area and geology in particular, and handled both English and Spanish speaking guests with ease, never making us feel like one group was being unfairly prioritised. We got snacks on the trip and the only slight issue was a 1h+ wait for the sunset at the end, but it was worth the wait. Highly recommended!

San Pedro de Atacama: Half day Valle de la Luna, Afternoon Tour
Highly recommend this tour! Our guide was amazing and very knowledgable, and it was fun to meet several people from all over the world. I think it should be renamed "hike" instead of "tour" though (I wasn't prepared and stupidly wore sandals - I don't recommend that). Be prepared to walk through lots of sand and rock, and bring sunscreen as the sun is SUPER strong. Definitely need to do this tour if you're seeing Atacama for the first time.

Very nice experience, very good English-Spanish speaking guide, fantastic landscapes. The experience was worth the price (not expensive anyway). Something definitely to recommend

San Pedro de Atacama: Half day Valle de la Luna, Afternoon Tour
This tour is a must-do!! We had done a salt flats day tour the day before this and were underwhelmed so we were a bit nervous about this tour. But this was light years better! Our tour guide, Daniel, was one of the best tour guides I’ve ever had. You could tell he really loved what he does, he loved the history of the area, and he loved taking really cool panoramas and pictures of the people on the tour :). You’ll make a few different stops on this tour and he would always explain the history (in Spanish and English) and then let you roam for a bit so it provides a bit of flexibility which was lovely. Great tour!!!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Moon Valley(Valle de la Luna) and the Atacama Desert are must-visits for nature lovers.

  • Pack sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water as there’s little shade in the desert, but bring warm clothing for the evening hours too, as temperatures can drop quickly, even in summer.

  • Most of the desert roads are unpaved and the terrain uneven, so a 4WD is advisable, and comfortable walking shoes are a must.

  • Cell phone service is scarce throughout the desert, and Wi-Fi is only available at a few hotels in San Pedro de Atacama.

When to Get There

The most popular time to explore Moon Valley is during the summer months (December–February), but winter (June–August) visits can be equally rewarding, although temperatures can plummet below freezing at night. Sticking around until sunset is a must, and most tours set out in the afternoon to ensure a sunset view.
