The Basics

Poas Volcano makes for a thrilling day-trip destination from San Jose, as tours regularly depart from the city for the volcano and often combine a visit with other popular Costa Rica activities such as white-water rafting, coffee plantation tours, or a stop at the La Paz Waterfall Gardens.

There, admire the mile-long (1.6-kilometer-long) crater home to the deep, rain-fed Botos Lagoon and dotted with smoking fumaroles—a view most will find accessible via the paved trail. Two slightly longer hikes offer incredible opportunities to spot wildlife like hummingbirds, wildflowers, and the elusive quetzal.

Beyond expectations
The tour was amazing and beyond our expectations! Our guide took us to many places on the way to the volcano (coffee field, wine and cheese tasting) and had a lot of knowledge to share about Costa Rica. We had a great time and the tour lasted for about 5 hours

Great trip to Poas Volcano

Poas Volcano National Park - Admission Ticket (Foreigners Only)
Great experience. All park associates were kind and considerate of our lack of fluent Spanish. Park Ranger spoke exceptional English. The drive was longer than expected due to traffic. Due to unfamiliar 2 lane, very curvy roads and heavy rains I would say that driving is for the very experienced. I would consider a tour and let someone else drive if I visited again. Was well worth the experience!

Poas Volcano National Park Half day tour from San Jose
Armando was a very professional driver, I felt comfortable the whole trip. It was nice to be a passenger instead of driving myself so that I could take in all the scenery from San Jose' to the volcano.

It was nice they shuttle us old people up in the ambulance. Too bad there were clouds blocking the view.

Other Costa Rican Volcanoes

The Poas Volcano is far from Costa Rica's only volcanic attraction, and geothermically inclined visitors should make a note to visit the Irazú Volcano, also home to a crater lake, or the popular Arenal Volcano. Guided hiking, adventure, or sightseeing tours depart for Costa Rica's volcanic hotspots daily.
