The Basics

If visiting independently, follow the raised boardwalk from the park entrance and you'll find yourself at the crossroads of the park's easy and popular hiking trails. Alternatively, visit Muir Woods on an organized tour departing from San Francisco. Both half- and full-day options are available and often include stops at the nearby Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, coastal Sausalito, or even Napa Valley wine country. Combined San Francisco city tours, bay cruises, and Muir Woods visits are also popular.

I enjoyed how each wine vineyard was different. My husband and I enjoyed the wine tasting and the lunch break in Solomon

Small Group Half Day Muir Woods and Sausalito Morning Tour
Good tour. I felt like I got my money's worth. The van was clean and comfortable and pick up/drop off was a breeze. Muir Woods is just beautiful and I could have spent an entire day there. I went with my 16 y/o daughter and she absolutely loved it. Well worth it.

Muir Woods & Sausalito Half Day Tour (w/ upgrade option: Sausalito Ferry)
Wonderful tour makes a stop at Golden gate bridge, muir woods and Sausalito. See and experience some if the nicest views of SF. Tour guide was very knowledgable and bus was clean and safe. Def would do tour again or recommend to others. Tip: get the option with Ferry ticket included you get to spend an extra hour at Sausalito and will have one of the most beautiful views of the Bay.

Muir Woods & Sausalito Half Day Tour (w/ upgrade option: Sausalito Ferry)
Our tour guide Archie really made the experience a memorable one. The amount of time spent in Muir Woods and Sausalito was the perfect amount of time. Lots of space to walk because not too much people due to COVID. In the future might be more crowded. In the morning we got on at Fisherman’s Wharf and got off at Union Square at the end of the tour.

Muir Woods and Sausalito Tour plus Bay Cruise
I wish it had been clearer that I needed to book the cruise time after Muir Woods, but it all worked out. Great bus driver; clean bus; on time!

The Ultimate Day in the Bay Including Muir Woods
This was our first time in San Francisco. We booked this tour to make the most of our time in SF. It was fantastic. Pat was our tour guide. He had a great personality. With him being from the area, he provided us with a lot of interesting information. We started with Muir Woods which was so serene followed by Sausalito for lunch. Next we ventured back into SF for all of the sights. We were able to see much more than I anticipated.

Muir Woods and Sausalito Tour plus Bay Cruise
A friendly and knowledgeable driver, a comfortable bus, and we were off on a relaxing tour of Muir Woods and Sausalito. We got snippets of info about the Golden Gate Bridge, the redwoods and Sausalito, and anything else on the way there or back. What a great tour!

Alcatraz with Muir Woods and Sausalito Tour
Faycal was a wealth of knowledge and humor, prone to car sickness, yet his expert driving prevented any issues. Muir Woods was peaceful and a bit mystical. Lunch in Sausalito was sublime. Finally Alcatraz island was informative and very sad. A piece of history one should take time to explore.

Mix & Save: Muir Woods and Sausalito + Escape From the Rock Cruise
The trees are big and beautiful. And the boat tour was even more amazing. Wouldn't recommend Muir Woods for the young ones, unless they are into hiking. All I heard was screaming mimi's everywhere. It really took away from my experience. Kids get bored and then get mad and cry

Small Group Half Day Muir Woods and Sausalito Morning Tour
Our tour was great. We had just enough time at all of the stops and enjoyed ourselves. The driver gave us a lot of good information not only about our destination but about San Francisco in general as we drove to and from Muir Woods.

How To Get There

Muir Woods is located just 12 miles (19 kilometers) north of San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge, making it an easy day trip from the city. It's possible to arrive by public transit, but the easiest way is by organized tour. If coming by car, drive north on Highway 101, continue north along Highway 1 (Shoreline Highway), then take the Panoramic Highway to Four Corners, where you'll turn left onto Muir Woods Road.

When to Get There

Muir Woods is open from 8am to sunset during summer and closes at 5pm in winter. The site can become quite crowded, especially on weekends, so try to come midweek, early in the morning, or late in the afternoon to beat the crowds. Even at busy times, a short hike will get you out of the densest crowds and onto trails with giant redwoods and stunning vistas though.

Show all

Hiking and biking along the well-marked trails are the most popular things to do in Muir Woods, but visitors can also look out for several critters such as chipmunks, squirrels, owls, and—near the Redwood Creek—sea otters. Kids can also enjoy their visit to Muir Woods with a free-to-download, activity-packed Junior Ranger booklet which includes animal-spotting activities.
