Langjökull

The Basics

Tours of Langjökull—most of which depart from Reykjavík, Húsafell, or Gullfoss—typically include transport by helicopter, Super Jeep, or snowmobile, and might feature stops at Gullfoss waterfall, Secret Lagoon, and the Víðgelmir lava cave. It’s best to book a tour to explore Langjökull as it can be dangerous to try it on your own—plus, tours come with specially-equipped vehicles and equipment to help you navigate the glacier.

For a unique experience, book a tour that allows you to explore the glacier at night when the Midnight Sun or Northern Lights are in full swing.

When can we do it again!
This trip was absolutely fantastic and represents great value for money - my wife (who has parkinsonism) and I are in our mid sixties and thoroughly enjoyed the company of younger trip members - having never riden a motor bike or skidoo - it was so easy to do - would recommend this to anybody for an exilerating experience - many thanks to all the staff for their support/ instructions during our visit- can't wait to come back and do it again - finished the day relaxing in the secret lagoon

Snowmobile Adventure on Langjökull Glacier from Gullfoss
Family trip including our two grand daughters aged 10 and 6. Very well organised and safe, even for the little ones. Views from the Glacier were great in the breaks in the cloud. Definitely on to try if your itinerary allows!

Borgarfjordur and Langjökull glacier- private tour
We had a little hiccup with one of the other popular tour companies and could not get onto the Glacier super Jeep tour and decided to book this private tour instead with Puffin Tours.. best decision we ever made! Villa was an amazing tour guide and was so flexible! He went through all of our previous experiences and customized our entire tour to accommodate what we were looking to see. We ended up doing a Glacier hike anyway which was far more exhilarating than we ever imagined! We had a wonderful time and got to squeeze in a few waterfalls with the daylight we had remaining, it was awesome. Best trip ever! Villa and his wife are amazing people and so knowledgeable! You won’t be disappointed :)

The staff were amazing especially ‘Sniper’. He was funny, kind & very helpful. Would love to do this again on a clear day, the weather was just not in our favour & made you appreciate how brutal Mother Nature can be!

Breathtaking scenery, snowmobiles were great fun, surprisingly fast 53kmph. Out for at least an hour on the glacier. Disappointed we were unable to see the ice cave. Secret pool was lovely and warm!

When to Get There

Ample snow and a man-made ice tunnel allow you to traverse the surface of Langjökull glacier at any time of year. However, the best time to visit Langjökull is during mid-winter, when all of the ice caves are accessible—this is also the optimal time to see the Northern Lights. If you visit in summer, you can still visit the ice tunnel on the west side of the glacier.

One Night of Iceland’s Best

It can be difficult to find the Northern Lights on your own, and even more difficult to see them from the city. If you’re short on time—or just want to experience the best of Iceland in one night—a tour offers all the adventure without the hassle of tracking the aurora down yourself. Some glacier tours start out with a snowmobile ride, ice cave exploration, or a dip in hot springs before capping off the evening with an aurora viewing. Keep in mind that peak season for the Northern Lights in Iceland is September through March, but conditions must be optimal for the lights to appear.
