The Basics

While the Shrine of Saint-Anne-de-Beaupré serves as a pilgrimage site, it also attracts sightseers. Visitors come to admire the elaborate construction and its artful stained glass windows, mosaics, and sculptures. The basilica also contains relics (specifically bone fragments) said to belong to St. Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary and grandmother of Jesus Christ.

Most visitors come here as part of organized day tours from Quebec City. Day tours typically include transportation to and from Old Quebec, and make stops at other locations on the outskirts of the city such as Montmorency Falls and Orleans Island (Ile d’Orléans) in the St. Lawrence River.

Great Day Trip from City
The Basilica was absolutely incredible. Massive! One of the most ornate churches I have ever been in. Gorgeous mosaics. The waterfall is pretty especially when the lights are shining on it. We enjoyed the copper museum as well. Not impressed with the chocolate from the shop, but I guess it is off season.

Half-Day Trip to Montmorency Falls and Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré from Quebec city
Our guided tour resonated with authenticity. Our tour guide shared many interesting details and his own love of the region— from Quebec City, along the King’s Highway to Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre to the Ile D’Orleans. The stops were all very interesting. I liked the waterfall with its roar and bridge and rainbows best. We even came back and saw it lit up with colors after dark!

We were able to see sites outside of Quebec City that we could not do on our own without a car. Tour was well-paced and all stops were interesting. Fall colours were spectacular, and driver Jean was excellent.

Half-Day Trip to Montmorency Falls and Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré from Quebec city
What a delightful afternoon I had on this tour. I’m a bit embarrassed to say that I’ve forgotten the name of my tour guide. He was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable and he managed to pack so much into the time we had. I saw the falls, A famous copper art shop, some of Île d’Orleans, many villages on the Beaupré coast and of course, Ste Anne de Beaupré. I would say this tour is a must for travellers to Quebec City!

Half-Day Trip to Montmorency Falls and Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré from Quebec city
Jean was an excellent, knowledgeable, funny driver/guide that kept the day insightful yet entertaining. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone wanting to see multiple places in one day. The only minor drawback is you do not have a lot of time in each place but if you manage your time properly you can make it work!!!

What Else to See in Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré

As tiny as the town of Saint-Anne-de-Beaupré is—with fewer than 3,000 residents—it does have a small cluster of tourist attractions. In addition to the basilica, you can see the Cyclorama of Jerusalem, a panoramic artwork depicting the Crucifixion; Musée Edison du Phonograph, a small museum devoted to phonographs; and the Atelier Paré, an economuseum that displays wood sculptures.
