Marietas Islands (Islas Marietas)

Marietas Islands, Mexico

The Basics

The islands are a haven for creatures such as dolphins, manta rays, humpback whales, sea turtles, and blue-footed boobies. Boat tours allow you to see the wildlife, but visitors are only allowed to set foot on one area of the government-protected islands, a strip of sand dubbed the Hidden Beach. Snorkeling and scuba diving tours from Sayulita and Puerto Vallarta are the most popular ways to experience the islands and their coral reef, while whale-watching tours also run in winter.

Perfect day out to la Playa del Amor
This tour was fantastic! Everything was very easy from check-in to return. The beach was lovely, the weather cooperated, and the guides were top notch. Carlos was so funny and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the day, and Emilio made us feel very safe in the boat ride there and back. 100% recommend to anyone visiting the Puerto Vallarta area!

Marietas Islands Snorkel Tour & Hidden Beach
The trip to the islands and the hidden beach was amazing. Getting to the hidden beach was pretty scary, I’m not going to lie but our guides had our safety in mind the whole time.

Marietas Islands: Snorkel Cruise from Puerto Vallarta
Snorkeling was fun, the private beach was picturesque and the crew was friendly, professional and entertaining! It was a little difficult to follow in English what the guide would explain; maybe in the future it’s better to complete the sentences or topic in one language

Snorkeling through a cave tunnel to a beautiful, secluded beach was exciting and so much fun! During the hourlong boat ride, our tour guide and boat pilot were courteous, friendly and very informative about our surroundings.

Marietas Islands Snorkel Cruise from Puerto Vallarta All Inclusive
We did the eco tour because we all don’t know how to swim. It was a fun experience. The best part was learning about el pájaro bobo de patas azules, and that there are other pájaros with yellow and orange legs. That was very interesting to learn about. Also la bufadora was very interesting too. And the whole crew on the boat was amazing and the food was delicious.

Conservation in the Marietas Islands

The Marietas Islands are an MAB Biosphere Reserve, meaning they are part of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere program to improve the relationship between humans and the environment. Because the islands have become increasingly popular, causing interference and possible damage to the ecosystem, the Mexican government authority known as the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) has closed the islands to the public in the past. Efforts may be made to prevent future damage in a variety of ways, so enjoy visiting while you can and keep in mind the fragile nature of this important ecological environment.
