Commissioned by King Louis XIV in the 18th century, Place Vendôme was designed to rival the Place des Vosges. Initially named the Place des Conquêtes (Conquests Square) and then Place Louis le Grand, the square was later upgraded by Napoleon, who ordered the creation of the Vendôme Column. Inspired by Trajan’s Column in Rome and built to commemorate the Battle of Austerlitz, the column was forged from enemy cannons and is still the square’s most prominent feature.
Today, the Place Vendôme is famed for its designer boutiques and jewelry shops, as well as landmarks like the Ritz and the Ministry of Justice. It can be glimpsed during hop-on hop-off bus, scooter, and driving tours of Paris and is also a frequent stop on walking tours and fashion-themed itineraries.
Numerous luminaries once lived on the Place Vendôme, including Frédéric Chopin, Coco Chanel, and George Sand.
The Place Vendôme is famed for its octagonal shape and its elegant buildings, which were laid out by architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart.
A number of top jewelry houses are found on the Place Vendôme, including Boucheron, Van Cleef & Arpels, Chaumet, Cartier, and Piaget.
Given its convenient location in the heart of Paris, the Place Vendôme is easy to reach. Take Métro line 3, 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, or 14, or the RER A or E, to Opéra station. You can also take bus line 21, 24, 27, 29, 42, 52, 68, 72, 81, 84, or 94. Alternatively, access the square on foot, by car, or by Vélib’ bike.

Due to its proximity to many of Paris’ most popular landmarks, the Place Vendôme can easily be visited as part of a day out on the town. Museums like the Louvre, Jeu de Paume, and Musée de l’Orangerie are all nearby. The Tuileries Garden, Palais Garnier, and Palais Royal are also just minutes away.
