How to Spend 1 Day in Monterrey

Travelers love the diversity of Monterrey. Its rich culture, vibrant night life, unique arts scene and wealth of outdoor adventures make it the perfect place to experience the beauty of Mexico. Here are some ideas on the best way to spend three days in Monterrey to get the most out of the city, the mountains and the countryside.

Day 1: Explore the City, See the Arts

Begin the day in the popular Macroplaza, where locals and travelers have been gathering since the early 1980s. Wander the halls of the Palacio de Gobierno and the ornate Biblioteca Fray Servando Teresa de Mier library, then head to the nearby Jardin Hundido to relax among trickling fountains and well-kept gardens. After Macroplaza check out Museo del Vidrio, where local glass artisans demonstrate their craft and hundred year old works are on display. Finally round out the day with dinner and a drink on the cobblestone streets of the famous Barrio Antiguo. Tuck into plates of spicy food while the sun goes down and the energy turns up, then spend the evening dancing the night away at one of the popular discotheques.

Day 2: Into the Wild

Escape the hustle of the city and head just 12 miles outside of town to Cumbres de Monterey National Park. Located in the northern foothills of the Sierra Madre Oriental, this outdoor wonderland has plenty to do, see and experience. Hike the well-forested trails and check out the indigenous wildlife that lines the paths, then trek to Cascada Cola de Caballo. The popular waterfall is the perfect place for an afternoon picnic and a refreshing swim before heading back to the bustling city center.

Day 3: Get Underground

After exploring the wilds of Cumbres de Monterey National Park above ground, spend a day down below wandering the 16 hidden chambers of Parque Grustas de Garcia, where temperatures always ring in at a comfortably cool 65 degrees. This impressive network of caves includes el salon de la luz, where natural light cascades through rock ceilings onto the cave’s floor below. Photographers will love snapping photos of the unique landscapes tucked far below the surface of the park.
