17 Mile Drive, CA

The Basics

A winding road that skirts through upscale neighborhoods, forested areas, and along the oceanfront, 17-Mile Drive is situated on private property and requires and entrance fee. With that in mind, skip the driving and focus on the views by visiting as part of a tour from San Francisco that includes transportation. Your guide will handle navigation and fees, plus many tours also stop at Monterey’s Cannery Row, Carmel-by-the-Sea, and more.

If you prefer to drive the route independently, don’t miss the Cypress Point Lookout, where you can see harbor seals; Spanish Bay, where you can follow a paved coastal trail to Asilomar State Beach; and the iconic Lone Cypress.

Monterey, Carmel and 17-Mile Drive - Full Day Tour from San Francisco
So glad I did this day trip! Our guide was so so knowledgeable on nature, updated facts on politics and corporate politics historically and currently and how decisions and actions negatively or POSITIVELY impacted what we were viewing. He was up on pop culture too! Learned so much about California and these historical places and views. Stopped at a number of interesting places and view points along the route. Many mansions pointed out. Am very impressed and will use Viator in the future

3-Hour Electric Bike Tour Along 17 Mile Drive of Coastal Monterey
Tour of Monterey was great. Jonathan was an amazing tour guide. He was so entertaining and the tour was just as educational. Besides that the tour was extremely fun. My wife and I have never rode a motorized bicycle before and it was awesome as at some points during the tour we were traveling at speeds over 20mph. I highly recommend this tour if your in the Monterey area.

Antonio is an excellent tour guide. My only complaint is we didn’t see the water at Carmel. We saw shops.

Monterey, Carmel and 17-Mile Drive - Full Day Tour from San Francisco
Great tour! Our driver added a bonus and drove though Santa Cruz so we could see the Boardwalk. Very nice trip; a good balance between what you pass by vs. where you stop. I would do it again!

Monterey, Carmel and 17-Mile Drive - Full Day Tour from San Francisco
Antonio who was our guide was terrific. He knows a lot of information about the cities and sites we were passing. We enjoyed the ride up to Monterey and enjoyed Carmel. Personally disappointed in Monterey as it seemed like a tourist trap. Would have loved to see the aquarium there but this particular tour doesn’t give enough time. Still overall a good experience

A nice way to spend a day seeing a bit of the scenic PCH

Monterey, Carmel and 17-Mile Drive - Full Day Tour from San Francisco
Antonio was a great driver and an excellent guide. His narrative kept things interesting and fun and broke up the drive. We had several little stops along the way - coffee, a beautiful produce stand, lighthouse, scenic vistas along PCH for photos. We had plenty of time at the main stops ( Monterey, Carmel, Pebble Beach). A great tour, highly recommend!

How to Get There

The 17-Mile Drive runs almost the length of the Monterey Peninsula coastal road, within the gated Pebble Beach community. Pay the entrance fee at any of the five entrances—most often, where Highway 1 meets Highway 68, or the Carmel tollbooth on San Antonio Avenue. The fee is waived if you eat or shop within the community.

When to Get There

Quite busy year-round, 17-Mile Drive is especially choked with visitors in the summer. Fall and spring are the best bets for clear skies; the summer fog is heavy in the morning and can sometimes linger all day, hampering views. The drive closes during major golf events; be sure to check online before departing.

Best Beaches Along the Drive

There are multiple spots to stop and stretch your legs along the drive. Whether you want a quick jaunt down to the frigid Pacific Ocean waters, a picnic lunch spot, or some soft sand on which to nap, you’ll find it here. Spanish Bay and Pebble Beach are favorites for travelers and locals alike.
