Perched on the doorstep of both Canyonlands National Park and Arches National Park, Moab is a top outdoor adventure destination in the United States. Come for world-class hiking and biking, off-roading, canyoneering, and other high-adrenaline fun, and stay for the town’s laid-back cool. Here are a some of Moab’s best adventures.
Mountain Biking
Cyclists know Moab as one of the area’s most challenging rides—the iconic Slickrock Trail covers 9.6 miles (15.4 kilometers) of highly technical terrain. But that’s just the beginning of mountain biking in Moab, and there’s riding near the city for all skill levels. While finding the right trail can be a challenge, guided bike tours help pair riders with the perfect route (and offer a helpful lift to the trailhead).
Hiking
Some of Moab’s best hiking is found within the two nearby national parks; the most popular might be the 3-mile (4.8-kilometer) walk to Delicate Arch in Arches, where crowds gather to watch the sunset and moonrise above the desert. Hiking in Moab can mean temperature extremes, so be sure to set out with plenty of water, extra layers, and a wide-brimmed hat.
Canyoneering
Rope up to explore the places where the landscape is too narrow, steep, and winding for trails. Canyoneering requires a highly specialized skill set, but with the proper gear and an expert guide, you can see places that few travelers will ever glimpse as you rappel down sheer cliffs, squeeze through tiny passageways, and hike into stony washes.
4WD Adventures
Some seriously rugged terrain means that much of the land around Moab can only be reached by 4WD (don’t even think about revving your rental sedan down these roads). Off-road tours range from guided jaunts in enclosed Jeeps to self-drive adventures in open-air vehicles that are made for the gnarliest of surfaces.
Rafting
It’s not all arid land and slickrock in the Utah desert, and Moab is a great base camp for planning a rafting trip, too. If you’re white-water rafting for the first time, check the “Class” rating of the tour; the higher the number, the more difficult the rapids. One favorite rafting trip from Moab is on the Colorado River, which offers more than a great time on the water—it gives you a front-row seat to nature.
