Three days in Guangzhou means you can explore the city’s highlights—both old and new—experience the culture, sample local cuisine, and take a day trip out of town. Here are some ideas on how to spend 72 hours in Guangzhou.
Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall (Sun Zhongshan Ji Nian Tang)
No.259 Dongfeng Middle Road, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou, China
While there are several memorial halls dedicated to Dr. Sun Yat-sen around the world, this one in Guangzhou is the largest. As such, nearly every guided city tour stops at the hall, along with other notable attractions such as the Academy of Clan Chen, Shamian Island, and Six Banyan Temple. Those based in nearby Hong Kong can also visit Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and other Guangzhou highlights on a day trip to the Chinese mainland.
Things to Know Before You Go
Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is one of Guangzhou’s most notable landmarks—a must-see for first-time visitors.
While the grounds are free to explore, expect to pay a small fee to access the exhibition areas.
Give yourself about two hours to explore the hall and its grounds.
The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is accessible for wheelchair users.
How to Get There
The easiest way to reach the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall independently is to take the Guangzhou metro (line 2) to Memorial Hall. Numerous public buses also stop nearby. However, most choose to visit as part of a convenient city tour with round-trip transportation included.
When to Get There
The memorial hall is open daily throughout the year. Since much of its 16 acres (6.5 hectares) are outdoors—and with the nearby Yuexiu Mountain to explore—plan to visit on a clear day when the weather is cool.
Who Was Sun Yat-sen?
Dr. Sun Yat-sen is best known as the father of the Republic of China (Taiwan), but he started his life in Guangzhou prefecture and later became involved with a group of revolutionaries in Hong Kong in the 1890s. After taking part in the first Guangzhou uprising against China’s Qing dynasty in 1895, Sun spent several years in exile before returning and successfully overthrowing the Qing dynasty in 1911.
