Black Forest

The Basics

With its stunning scenery, clean air, dozens of mineral spas, plentiful wineries, and numerous small towns, travelers can easily spend a day, a week, or a month exploring this region between the Rhine River and the Alpine foothills of Switzerland. The Black Forest Railway is a popular activity within the forest, stretching for 93 miles (150 km) through the region and passing several magnificent waterfalls along the way.

Day trips are available from Frankfurt, Zurich, and Strasbourg, each typically including a stop at the spa town of Baden-Baden, home of the famous Kurhaus Casino. If you have more time, embark on a multi-day tour for the chance to experience a wider swath of the Black Forest's small towns.

Beautiful and magnificent buildings in Strasbourg
This was a wonderful trip. Strasbourg is a beautiful city with so many magnificent buildings. There was just too little time in Strasbourg to even experience Alsatian cuisine. Baden Baden was a pretty little town. Again there was too little time. I would suggest that Strasbourg be made a tour on its own and Baden Baden and Black Forest another tour on its own.

Black Forest and Strasbourg Day Trip from Frankfurt
Baden Baden is a quaint town. The black forest is a nice break. Food was delicious especially the BLACK FOREST CAKE! Strasbourg was not so nice with the street people bedding down and their dogs confronting the tourists and other four-legged friends.

Germany Freiburg & Black Forest Private Day Trip from Strasbourg
Pauline was amazing. She took us through Freiburg, a stroll around Titisee, and then a beautiful drive through the Black Forest. We wanted a great apple strudel and she recommended a great place in Titisee. She also gave us a lot of great recommendations to stop at for our next journey to the French Alps.

Black Forest and Strasbourg Day Trip from Frankfurt
Although it was a long trip, the time went by quickly because of our funny and knowledgeable guide, Willi. He kept us laughing while also sharing a lot of interesting information throughout the day. We walked through the beautiful town of Baden Baden, visited to Black Forest (and ate Black Forest cake!) then on to Strasbourg for a Christmas market!!

Black Forest and Baden-Baden Day Trip from Frankfurt
Would recommend! Fun journey! The driver/ guide was really informing and flexible with the schedule, he also let us go to the Black Forest to see the water falls, as a bonus Hidden gem, his information about Germany and the cities we went to are rich and informative, value paid for this trip is worth it! He even dropped us to the place we were planning to go to after the trip ended instead of the meeting point. Fun enjoyable full day indeed!

Black Forest and Baden-Baden Day Trip from Frankfurt
A fantastic day! William was our guide and to say in his own words, “It was more than a tour.” He was funny, knowledgeable, and an absolute pleasure to spend the day with. The spa town of Baden-Baden was gorgeous, I wish we had more time there! The meeting point was very easy and there were stops along the way. Good trip for all ages! The lake at Mummelsee was beautiful...good chance to buy a cuckoo clock. We had a wonderful German dinner in the way back to Frankfurt.

Black Forest and Strasbourg Day Trip from Frankfurt
Peter was waiting with a car to take us on the trip. Peter was great and he had great knowledge regarding the area but the whole time it was raining. So couldn't enjoy it as much as we wanted to. Black Forest was foggy most of the time but the time where we could see as much, it was beautiful. Strasbourg was beautiful. The christmas decorations were the best. City was lively and colorful.

Germany Freiburg & Black Forest Private Day Trip from Strasbourg
Florence was a great guide. Freiburg is a very charming college town with tons of history and character. We had a lovely outdoor lunch in the market square with Florence & , because we were interested in the local wines, she took us to her favorite wine shop. The drive through the Black Forest & stop at the lake was so scenic & beautiful. The lake town is lovely & we indulged in Black Forest cake at the local bakery. Florence was a wealth of knowledge & we thoroughly enjoyed this trip.

Black Forest and Strasbourg Day Trip from Frankfurt
A lot of driving and the weather was not entirely with us but Andre did a good job of commentary and driving (very fast) on the autobahn. Baden-Baden was pretty and interesting. Black Forest and Mummelsee disappointing in the rain, but Strasbourg was beatiful even in the rain.

Good tour to do when you are in Strasbourg. We especially enjoyed Titisee and wished we could have spent more time there. Arianne, our guide, gave good insights about the places we visited. There was good balance of structured tour and free time

Black Forest and Baden-Baden Day Trip from Frankfurt
To begin with we had just a total of four people in the group. The driver / guide Herr Thomas was good at his job and knowledgeable, saw traffic ahead and changed the route to reach in time to the various destination. He knew the area very well and covered it well with information. Thank you

We had limited time on our trip and this is definitely the best trip on short time. It is a long day though, but totally worth it!

How to Get to the Black Forest

The Black Forest region is tucked into Germany's southwest corner, in the state of Baden-Wurttemberg. The beautiful university city of Freiburg im Breisgau is an ideal starting point for your exploration, as well as a must-see attraction in its own right. The Frankfurt Airport is the closest international airport, while the Strasbourg Airport in France is also conveniently close. Between local and regional lines, it's easy to reach just about any corner of the Black Forest by bus or train, but some visitors opt to rent a car for self-guided tours.

When to Get There

Many travelers consider early fall and late spring the ideal time to visit the Black Forest, when the weather is temperate and the region—one of the most-visited mountain areas in Europe—is less crowded. If visiting between June and August, be sure to book your hotels and spas well ahead of time. Also keep in mind that some hotels and restaurants in the area close for about a month during winter.
