The Basics

Khan Al-Khalili is an essential stop on Old Cairo and Islamic Cairo tours and a focal point of any Cairo shopping tour. Enjoy it with a guide, who can help you navigate the narrow passageways, advise on quality goods, and identify the many historic buildings within the souk. Walking tours typically visit the nearby Sultan Hassan Mosque and Al-Azhar Mosque, while Islamic Cairo tours often include the Citadel of Saladin, the Alabaster Mosque, and the Mosque of Ibn Tulun.

Private Cairo City Tour: Giza Pyramids, Egyptian Museum and Khan Khalili Bazaar
Our tour was AMAZING! Our guide was very knowledgeable, friendly, funny, and was able to answer all of the questions we had. The tour was much more than I expected. Lunch was delicious! The guide even stopped at a couple of places to ensure that we had a true Cairo experience. He also recommended more places to visit and was exactly on time. We didn’t have to wait for anything. He had everything pre-planned. We can not thank our driver enough! He definitely made this an experience to remember!

Cairo Private Day Tour to Egyptian Museum Citadel and Khan Khalili Bazaar
Thank you Ahmed, we had a great time at the Citadel and the Museum. We were picked up at our hotel on time and driven to the mentioned sites. Ahmed was very polite and knowledgeable. He is a great guide and he explained in very well detail the places that we visited. It was pleasure to have had him as our tour guide. We definitely recomend this activity, specially if you are with children. They will enjoy these sites.

Pharaonic Village and Khan El-Khalili Bazaar Cairo Tour
The tour guide was very nice, he went way above & beyond, getting us koshary after we said something about wanting to try it, also he tried to step in & help us out with the person who answers the phone for this company as he had been extremely rude to me the day before. The village was more of a kids kinda event but they had some beautiful souvenirs in the shop area-The 5 starts is strictly for our guide (sorry forgot the name) & not for the company.

Hamada was a wonderful knowledgeable and friendly tour guide/driver. Since it was just my husband and I he made suggestions and we were able to extend times or choose too. A lot more to see than just the Pyramids. Greatly recommend it.

Egyptian Museum, Alabaster Mosque & Khan El-Khalili
Extremely satisfied with this tour. Our tour guide met us in our hotel lobby in the morning and was extremely smart, friendly and gave us a lot of information while we toured around Cairo. He showed us a lot of the top things to see in the Egyptian Museum, offered to take our photos multiple times, guided us around safely from our hotel to the museum and to the Alabaster Mosque. I would highly recommend this tour when you go to Egypt, you will not be disappointed!

Day-Tour To Giza Pyramids, Great Sphinx, Egyptian Museum & Khan El Khalili
Amazing and very knowledgeable tour guy. Highly recommended this tour. Our tour guy is PHD local student in history, I feel like he knows so much about the History we can pretty much ask him anything. We really enjoy our time there.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Khan Al-Khalili is a must for history buffs and shoppers alike.

  • As elsewhere on the streets of Cairo, women will feel more comfortable dressed modestly. Wear loose, flowing clothing that covers arms, legs, and torso.

  • Bring plenty of Egyptian cash and come prepared to bargain—haggling is a vital part of any Middle Eastern shopping experience.

  • There is wheelchair access to parts of Khan Al-Khalili, but cobbles, narrow streets, and jam-packed stores present challenges.

How to Get There

Khan Al-Khalili is located in the heart of Islamic Cairo, around 2 miles (3 kilometers) east of Tahrir Square. The best metro station for Khan Al-Khalili and, indeed, all Islamic Cairo is Bab Al-Shaaria (line 3), less than a mile (1.5 kilometers) away. Time-pressed travelers will want to opt for a tour that includes door-to-door round-trip transfers.

When to Get There

Khan Al-Khalili is not an organized market but an agglomeration of shops and stalls, which open and close on a pattern that suits them. Most stores trade from around 9am until well into the evening, with the exception of Friday mornings and Sundays. A few vendors operate even then.

What to See and Do in the Khan Al-Khalili

Historically minded travelers should head straight to the gold district of the Khan Al-Khalili, one of its most authentic areas. Photographers will want to seek out Islamic arched gateways and towering piles of spices. Take the time to enjoy a traditional coffee in the neighborhood, perhaps at the historic Al-Fishawy Coffee House.
