Rincon Visit with Local Guide

Rincon Visit with Local Guide

star-4.5

Rincon Village is the oldest village on Bonaire and rich in history. It is also the oldest continual community within the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. Originally settled by the Spanish in the early 1500’s, Rincon was strategically nestled within a valley to ward off impending danger from pirates and other threats.   In the 17th century, slaves were brought to Bonaire and worked tending crops and the salt pans until 1863. Living in Rincon, the slave men would weekly walk a 7 hour journey south for work and then return on weekends to gather supplies at Mangazina di Rei (King’s store house), and visit their families.  We will stop at the Kadushi distillery where you will be able to taste the local cactus liquor made on Bonaire for free. After visiting Kadushi we will be stopping at our last stop - a local restaurant called Posada. Here you can try native island food and get a taste for the local flavor. Please click on the Itinerary tab at the top to see our 10 points of interest!

Indian's Description Tour with Local Guide

Indian's Description Tour with Local Guide

star-5
2
On this tour an experienced guide will lead you to the wildly beautiful East side of Bonaire.Often missed by tourists, the east side of the island has breathtaking views of crashing waves hitting the rocky coast, cliff-like cave corals, “bocas” or mouths of the sea, and unobstructed views.Numerous boats ship-wrecked on this side of the island before a lighthouse was put in place and there’s proof that at one point native Indians inhabited some of the cliff coves. Your guide will take you to one such cove and show you Indian inscriptions that are believed to be markings of the Arawark Indians. They have been dated back to at least the 15th century. Our next stop will be Boca Onima where you can feel the power of the waves surging against Bonaire’s shore and view the wind turbines that play a crucial role in supplying energy to the land. Just be sure to hold on to your hat! Throughout this journey, your guide will be pointing out nature, history and telling you about Bonaire culture.

Bonaire's highlights include a trip to the Salt hills and a flamingo refuge on the island's south coast. We'll also stop at the Slaves Huts and the lighthouse, where the guide will tell us about the slave huts' history and the beginnings of the salt industry. Travel through the scenic countryside, learning about the 1000 steps dive site, bat caverns, natural life, flora and animals, and the Karpata Plantation, where processed aloe was originally cultivated and exported, while cruising to Bonaire's first settlement community. Rincon is thought to be the Caribbean's oldest village. Hidden away from the sight of the roving pirates along the shore in the basin of the north hills. Visit the old traditional home, which has been turned into a cultural historic museum by the original family descendants. On your route back to the ship, you'll leave Rincon and travel through the north-eastern desert-like region, which has gigantic cacti, wild donkeys, and pounding waves.

Flamingo & Mangrove Trip with Local Guide

The mangrove forest of Lac Bay is one of the best preserved mangrove forests in the Caribbean. For generations this lush, green environment has served as a home and incubator to native fish, baby rays, lobster and seahorses. The bushy and beautiful trees and their deep, webbed roots, protect Bonaire from extreme weather conditions. In fact, it’s rumored that they’re strong enough to withstand the wind and water to the point of slowing a tsunami!  While driving south to the Mangroves, your guide will inform you about the history and sites of Bonaire. You’ll also have a chance to ask questions and explore before arriving at beautiful Lac Bay.
