The Basics

Visiting Mont Saint-Michel on a day trip from Paris is a popular option for travelers who are short on time and would rather not drive themselves. The village’s Benedictine abbey (Abbaye du Mont Saint-Michel), named after the archangel Michael, is the main attraction in the area, and its entrance fee is included in some tours. Some visitors with more time to explore spend a few days in the Normandy town of Caen or Bayeux for easier access to the island and a chance to see other northern France attractions such as the D-Day landing beaches of World War II and the coastal village of Honfleur.

Private Day Tour of Mont Saint-Michel from Bayeux
We were lucky enough to have the same guide for two excursion days and he was THE BEST! While he drove us to our sites, we were able to converse all about architecture, history, politics, French life, etc. He was personable, funny, and great with our children. He alone was worth the tours. Mont Saint Michel itself is a magical place. It is super special and unique. You won't regret booking this tour.

Mont Saint-Michel Day Trip from Bayeux
We had a wonderful trip from Bayeux to Mont Saint Michel. Our tour guide Roman was fantastic! We came to Bayeux for the beech tour but found Mont Saint Michel to be a real highlight! We went in the off season which turned out to be a benefit, the town is quite small. I can't image it during high season with large crowds.

Mont Saint-Michel Day Trip from Bayeux
Our experience with this tour was absolutely incredible! The tour guide was friendly and engaging and gave us way more information than a regular audio guide or tour. On the drive from Bayeux to Mont-Saint-Michel, he gave us history of the area and answered any questions that we had. He was incredibly knowledgeable and really enhanced the entire experience.

Mont St Michel Small Group Guided Day Tour from Paris
Sit back, let your driver take you to the beautiful Mont St. Michele. The van was comfortable, clean and relaxing. Our guide was pleasant. Our van was very quiet, not a lot of conversation, but that was ok. Just enjoyed the day and didn't have to drive ourselves or ride on a huge tour bus.

3-Days Guided Normandy, St Malo, Mont Saint Michel & Loire Castles from Paris
Efficient use of time to see as many important sites as possible. Guides were friendly and knowledgeable. Hotels were utilitarian, but clean, comfortable with adequate breakfast. Only one dinner included. Buses were clean, modern, and comfortable. Chateaux not castles in the usual sense. Wine tasting was fun, but only three pours (red, rose, white)

Full Day Tour focus on Mont St Michel from Bayeux with a National guide
We had a wonderful tour of Mont St. Michel with Kate. She was friendly, sweet and very knowledgeable not just on Mont St. Michel but the entire region. We had plenty of time to tour the monastery, have lunch and explore the small town. The van was new and very comfortable. Great day! We would highly recommend this tour.

Mont Saint Michel Guided Tour with Abbey Visit from Paris
Amazing trip. It was nice that not many people were visiting and I highly suggest that you join a small group (ours was 7). The view was amazing, and the tide was low so you can really see the village standing out. Might be a good experience too if it was high tide as well, so it would look as if it was floating. But overall, it was great. My friend and I enjoyed it

Mont Saint-Michel Audio Guided Day Trip with Abbey Entrance from Paris
It was a very long bus trip and very exhausting but even though it was raining, it was worth it. The view is magnificent. I bought only the bus trip with audio - guide. I'm not so sure if the audio guide was worth it. I had free time to go to the top of the Mont-St.-Michel and visit the Abbey and had lunch in the surrounding area. I did a lot of walking.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The parking lot is located on the mainland, 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) from the island; a shuttle runs from the lot to a drop-off point 440 yards (400 meters) from the entrance to Mont Saint-Michel.

  • The village is full of narrow walkways and steps, so wear comfortable shoes and prepare for crowds.

  • There are no stairs from the parking lot to the entrance or along the paved main street of the village (although it does climb quickly), but 350 steps lead from the top of the main street to the abbey. There is no elevator.

  • Wi-Fi is available at the tourist office in the village.

When to Get There

Mont Saint-Michel’s tourist office is open every day except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, while the abbey is closed January 1, May 1, and December 25. As a small island, it’s a popular destination with limited space, so arrive early to avoid some crowds, which are the biggest in summer.

Exploring the Mont Saint-Michel Abbey

After paying your entrance fee to the abbey, grab a visitor’s guide for a self-guided tour of the Gothic landmark’s cloister and rooms. Alternatively, guided 75-minute tours in French and English are available year-round; they are included in admission with no reservation required. To hear commentary without a live guide, purchase a 1-hour audio guide for a small fee.
