The Basics

Whether taking a sunset cruise around Cape Sounion, driving the scenic coastal road along the Attica peninsula, or enjoying the panoramic views from the cliff tops, there are numerous options for visiting the ancient temple. One of the most popular ways to visit is on a half-day tour from Athens, and many tours also stop at the idyllic beaches along the Attica Riviera, or include a romantic dinner in Vouliagmeni Bay. For the best value, combine a Cape Sounion tour with an Athens city tour, a walking tour of the Athens Acropolis, or a day trip to Mycenae and Epidaurus.

Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon Half-Day Small-Group Tour from Athens
My wife and I greatly enjoyed this quick trip down the coast for the amazing views of and from the Temple of Poseidon. The guide was very personable and shared many insights of the areas we passed during the drive down and allowed us plenty of time to enjoy ourselves once at the site. Would very much recommend this as the vistas are outstanding.

Half Day Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon Private Tour
Fantastic experience! Apostolis (Tolis) was super chill and let my wife (who's pregnant) and I see all the Cape and Temple of Poseidon at our own pace. He even let us chill at the beach for a bit which was great. The restaurant he took us to was also really good. The stuffed tomatoes, Greek "burger" and wine were all excellent. Highly recommend this tour, and a special thank you to our excellent driver/guide, Tolis. Bravo and efharisto!

Tour operator was flexible and accommodating when I wanted to add some friends to the car and add a second pick up spot. Driver was knowledgeable and friendly. Temple of Poseidon is a must see and I am very glad we did it comfortably in a private car on our own schedule. Great tour, I would recommend to anyone

Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon Half-Day Small-Group Tour from Athens
Bus was clean, comfortable. The stop at the lake was for a very brief look from outside the fence. I would have given 5 stars if the driver hadn't told some hugely unnecessary lies about other Athens attractions. Still puzzling through that...

Our time with Dmitris was amazing! He was so knowledgeable and entertaining. He kept 4 teenagers engaged (which isn't always easy to do). He was flexible with our needs and pace. And the restaurant overlooking the Parthenon served beautifully prepared local specialties. It made for a fantastic day and greatly contributed to our trip with our new graduates.

Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon Half-Day Small-Group Tour from Athens
We had a great trip going to Cape of Sounion. After a stop at a volcanic water pool Lake Vouliagmeni we headed to Temple of Poseidon. There was a lot of discussion on the way about Greek methology and other topics. Sundown was absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately some clouds got in the way.

Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon Half-Day Small-Group Tour from Athens
Beautiful sunset spot at the Temple of Poseidon. Quite windy at the top, but the views were incredible. Van ride out was longer than expected, but was made more fun by our guide Theo! Theo took the time to get to know everyone on the trip & taught us a lot along the way with his fun trivia games. Along the way, the stop at Lake Vouliagmenis was pretty.

Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon Half-Day Trip from Athens
Nice trip to Temple of Poseidon - the views were magnificent and the tour guide was knowledgeable. It was a nice way to see in person this part of Greek Mythology.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Wear comfortable shoes as the ruins are situated on uneven ground and require some walking.

  • Bring your swimsuit. There is a swimming beach at the foot of the cape.

  • Parts of the temple are accessible to those with limited mobility, and wheelchair accessible tours are available.

When to Get There

The most popular time to visit the Temple of Poseidon is during summer, but the site can get crowded. Visiting in the early morning is the best way to avoid the crowds and the midday heat, while the most atmospheric time for photos is at sunset. Alternatively, an out-of-season visit, in still balmy May or September, might mean you get the ruins to yourself.

What to See at the Temple of Poseidon

Thought to have been built by Iktinos, the architect who designed Athens' ancient Agora, the Temple of Poseidon is one of the most visited archaeological sites in Greece. Today, only 16 of the original 34 Doric columns remain, one of which is famously inscribed with the name Lord Byron, who visited the temple in the early 19th century. Additional highlights include the remains of a propylaeum and the Temple of Athena, while the real star of the show is the splendid view, which stretches as far as the Cyclades and Peloponnese islands.
