Parthenon

Athens Acropolis, Athens

The Basics

The best way to visit the Parthenon is on a walking tour of the Acropolis of Athens, including neighboring ruins such as the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the Erechtheion. First-time visitors to Athens can also combine a visit with a city sightseeing tour; a half-day trip to the Temple of Poseidon and Cape Sounion; or even a food tasting city tour. History buffs can tack on a tour of the Ancient Agora or a visit to the New Acropolis Museum.

Acropolis of Athens & Parthenon Walking Tour with Optional Acropolis Museum
Our tour guide, “Vicky”, was wonderfully engaging, patient, and knowledgeable. Taking a guided tour definitely adds value to the experience, as I walked away with a whole new appreciation for Athens! Took the 9am tour which of course has crowds but Vicky warned later in the day is extra crowded.

Acropolis of Athens & Parthenon Walking Tour with Optional Acropolis Museum
I'm a few weeks late writing this but enjoyed it so much that I had to make sure I came back to leave a review. This tour company is great, we had a slight issue with the alarm in the morning which meant we missed our planned tour but after contacting them panicking in the morning the lady who organises the tickets (very sorry I dont remember her name!) was so calm and helpful and simply booked us on to the following tour the next day. This definitely turned around what could have been a very dissapointing part of the holiday as it allowed us to carry on enjoying the day and we lost nothing out of it which we are very grateful for. The fact that the tickets are bought as part of the price is also a plus, a lot of tours on here do not do that but its much easier to have the guide organise everything and just removes the need to worry about one more thing when you are on holiday. The tour guide Kimono was very funny, knowledgeable and immediately got everyone acquainted. He is obviously very well versed in the history of Athens and we enjoyed his stories and anecdotes a lot. We opted for the walking tour and also the museum tour, both were very good and without the guide I feel we would have missed out on many things so it was a great pleasure to be part of it all.

The only way to see the Acropolis

Acropolis of Athens & Parthenon Walking Tour with Optional Acropolis Museum
Our guide, Miss Efi, was a jewell! She had a degree in archaeology and worked on the restoration of the Parthenon. She let us chronologically through the treasures of the Acropolis museum and then to the Parthenon and surrounding buildings explaining everything in detail. She was easy to understand and delightful. She accommodated by changing her itinerary so we could eat first.

Acropolis of Athens & Parthenon Walking Tour with Optional Acropolis Museum
Our tour was great! The guide was funny and knowledgeable, along with being patient for us to take photos. We had a great time and although we were tired from the sun, we stayed with her to hear about the new acropolis museum as well. The location was challening to find in the morning, but we made it and really enjoyed our day!

Acropolis of Athens & Parthenon Walking Tour with Optional Acropolis Museum
This was a good choice for visiting Acropolis and Acropolis Museum. Our guide was kind, professional and interesting. The tour was well managed, despite the place being very crowded and I can say we enjoyed it. The agency organizing the tour was also very helpful - we had some additional questions after booking and they were quick to answer and really helpful.

Acropolis of Athens & Parthenon Walking Tour with Optional Acropolis Museum
We toured the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum. Our guide’s name was Efi and she was completely great- friendly, enthusiastic, welcoming of questions, and extremely knowledgeable. It was a fairly warm day to climb the Acropolis and she helped us with finding shade and taking sufficient breaks. She then gave us an extraordinary tour of the Acropolis Museum. My wife and two teenage children were engrossed and most appreciative.

Mythological experience of the Acropolis

Acropolis of Athens & Parthenon Walking Tour with Optional Acropolis Museum
This tour is a must if you are visiting Athens - the Acropolis and Parthenon are the main attractions in Athens! Our guide Alexandra was very knowledgable about Greek mythology and made us experience what it felt like living in the Acropolis of Athens during ancient times! Be prepared to get tired after the tour as there is a lot of standing time - wear comfortable shoes and don't forget to drink water and apply sunblock! I would also suggest doing the Acropolis Museum (after the Acropolis) as it gives one further insight on what you see in the Acropolis.

An Awkward Encounter with England

In the early 19th century, when Athens was under Turkish rule, sculptures from the Parthenon were sold to Englishman Lord Elgin. The artifacts, nicknamed the ‘Elgin Marbles’ are now on display in London's British Museum, but they remain a point of contention for the Greek government, which still insists they should be returned.
