Athens Acropolis, Athens

The Basics

The Acropolis complex is one of the most visited attractions in Greece, included on most Athens city sightseeing tours and often combined with a visit to the New Acropolis Museum or other Ancient Greece sites, such as Epidaurus, Cape Sounion, and the Temple of Poseidon. The best way to explore the ruins is on a guided city walking tour, taking in highlights such as the iconic Parthenon, Propylaea (Propylaia), the Temple of Athena Nike, and Erechtheion.

Incredible tour, well worth it!
We did the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum Tour and it was amazing. Such well preserved history. Katia was our guide and she was extremely knowledgeable. We had an inquisitive group with lots of questions and she was able to answer them all. There was a lot of walking but Katia stopped often, in shade when possible, to explain different features of the tour. We have done many tours and this one stands out!

Highly recommend a trip to the acropolis as no trip to Athens will be complete without it. I recommend if traveling at this time to just go to the tickets office directly at the acropolis as no lines in these times of COVID. No libes anywhere. After a visit here go to tge museum.

Our guide was excellent. Her English was very good, she spoke slowly, explained clearly, and shared interesting information in just the right amount. This is the second tour I had taken of the Parthenon and Acropolis (the other was 7 months ago), and this was far superior!

Acropolis and Acropolis Museum Tour with Entry Tickets
The Acropolis is amazing, but be warned, there is a lot of uphill walking. It would be best if your trip could be arranged during cooler periods. Our guide was excellent in describing the various sites such as the Erechtheum, theatre of Dyonesus, temple of Athena, and construction with marble.

Athens All Included: Acropolis and Museum In a Cultural Guided Walking Tour
Maria was a wonderful guide - extremely knowledgeable and very nice. There were only six of us so it was a nice small group. The sights and history of the Acropolis were amazing. If you are in Athens, this is a must do tour!

It was okay. I've been on a lot of tour since I started traveling and this was mediocre at best. Nice to have access to the Acropolis and get a little info, but it felt more like I was in a classroom than on an engaging tour.

Athens: Private Tour of the Acropolis Only
Highly recommend this tour. Betty was one of the best tour guides we have had. She had complete knowledge of the history, social and architectural aspects of the Acropolis and Greece throughout the ages. Made the trip very interesting and educational.

Acropolis Walking Tour, Including Syntagma Square and Historical City Center
This was a great tour for only 3.5 hours. Our guide Hermes was very knowledgeable. Since I have a bad ankle it was hard for me since the ground is so uneven (all over Greece). I ended up forfeiting the Acropolis given my personal limitations.

Excellent tour. Bring your walking shoes! Our guide (Kostas K.) was knowledgeable and passionate about the Acropolis. He was patient with regard to questions. Going through the museum with a guide helped explain both the exhibits and the design of the museum. Well worth the time and price.

We ended up having a private tour of the acropolis and acropolis museum. Nikos was extremely knowledgeable and we enjoyed an excellent tour. Would highly recommend.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Choose between a standard entrance ticket and a multi-attraction ticket that includes access to other sites.

  • Admission lines can take up to two hours in peak summer, so it's best to book ahead.

  • The Acropolis provides little shade—bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water if visiting in the summer months.

  • Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking over uneven ground.

  • Most areas of the archaeological site are wheelchair accessible; an elevator is located on the northwest side.

How to Get There

It's impossible to miss the Acropolis of Athens—you can see it from just about anywhere in the city, and the easiest way to get there is on foot. Alternatively, the closest metro stations are Thesion, Monastiraki, and Acropolis. Ticket booths are located at the foot of Acropolis Hill, on both the north and south sides, from where it's a short walk uphill to the archaeological site.

When to Get There

The Athens Acropolis is open year-round, but it can get extremely busy and hot in the summer months. To avoid the crowds, arrive right before opening or just before close, when most of the day-trippers and cruise passengers are yet to arrive or have already left. Travelers on a budget might prefer to visit in winter—ticket prices can be reduced by up to 50 percent between November and March.

Where to Enjoy the Best Views of the Acropolis

Find a prime view of the Parthenon at the top of Mars Hill; capture the archaeological site in its entirety from Filopappos Hill, located just southwest of the Acropolis; or gaze out over the Acropolis and the surrounding city from Lycabettus Hill, the highest point in Athens. The clifftop ruins are at their most atmospheric at night—choose a rooftop bar or restaurant in central Athens for a great view of the illuminated Acropolis.
